running a HWS ( daytime) from a Solar System
we are in the process of buying a new 3kw Solar system , and the solar company has listed an option of running our HWS ( via a 1.8kw element and a timer ) through the daytime.
in theory this sounds good , as where we live in QLD we get an average of 300 sunny days per year.
the existing HWS is a 250 litre rheem with a 3.6kw element , and only 2 of us live here and not usually home through the day. supposedly a 1.8kw element heating for 4 hours per day , with a manual override for boost , should work.
I know the FIT is bugger all so this sounds like a good idea. any thoughts?

Your on the right track. The FIT really shouldn't even come into consideration at its current level. The real name of the game is to supply yourself with free electricity. I have had to re-educate my wife from doing everything at night (low tarrif) to doing everything at daytime (free solar elec). We have solar hot water so that doesn't come into it.

quick update - the new system is in and running well , very happy for the price - $2900. Didnt go for the hot water daytime heating function , instead connected the HWS to off peak Tariff 31 which worked out cheaper.
the Solar company did a great job on the install , and prior to adding the new meter the Ergon sparkie did a full audit of the whole system to ensure it was done properly.
Ive got a solar hotty evacuated tubes in Qld.
Its connected to off peak electricity, in 4 or 5 years Ive turned on off peak 3 or 4 times.
Lots of times in the afternoon you have to wash dishes or something to release some hot water and stop the pump kicking in and out as it gets too hot and releases from the pressure valve
