Default Alan Young, ‘Mister Ed’ Star, Dies at 96

I was a big fan of Mr. Ed as a boy. Frankly I thought Alan Young had died years ago.
The only movie I recall seeing him in was "The Time Machine" starring Rod (the boy from lidcombe) Taylor.

After school when I was a boy; 9:30 in the morning on channel 7 when I started in the TV repair business. Work slowed down a bit when Mr. Ed was on.
    Always remember this special guest.

In the beginning it was a Prime Time show in the evening.
I remember reading to get the Horse to move its mouth that way, they gave it some Peanut Butter and then filmed it, then cut and edited the movement to suit the script.
Hands up those who go further back and remember 'Francis the Talking Mule' as I think Chill Wills did the Voice for both shows.

Thanks Wilbur for a lot of good laughs, RIP.

    ***************************

Mr Ed was a Gelding called Bamboo Master and to get him to 'talk' according to wikipedia, the trainer of him and Francis the Talking Mule used a thread into the horse's mouth and when it was pulled, the animal obviously tried to remove it.
Perhaps even back then this may have been deemed by some as cruelty so the story about using 'Peanut Butter' was made thinking it sound more acceptable to the audience.
