    Default Aussie gold hunters

As a prospector I really enjoy hunting for gold, its not about having the gold its about finding the gold, My sons and I travel all around Tassi and hike into some very hard to get places, some days can be very rewarding, about 6 months ago we found a nice honey hole, but due to weather here havent been able to get back, next month or 2 should be great, i'm super excited to hit this creek especially after the floods we had here. This new series that airs in September the 15th on Discovery channel, it is a 8 part series, but just for you I am giving you the chance to view the first 4 episodes in this season, I hope you enjoy please be patient as I upload each episode thanks

You wouldn't believe it Rick, my missus pipped up this week telling me how much she's always wanted to go Gold Prospecting!
It came out of no where, i've never heard her even suggested before... ever.

And for a lady that much prefers fine Hotels or Resorts over Camping, i'm still in a bit of shock.
I was actually going to ask you what Detector you would suggest as a starting point.
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

Mate thats excellent, this is something you can do and enjoy together as well as get exercise and enjoy the great outdoors if your going to target gold, I have used my Garrett AT Gold detector with great success netting around 2 ounces with it in the last 2 years, and it is an excellent entry level machine as its very easy to use, it is also water proof to 3 metres making it great to work in creeks and rivers, when I first purchased mine it was around $1100, I have recently purchased but yet to use, and not cheap the Minelab GPX 5000 at a cool $5300, but i'm chasing some serious stuff, and I intend on heading to WA with my sons next year

Rick, have you contemplated gold dredging if you have running creeks. I did it for years but those little chingas didn't leave much behind when they did the follow up

Its illegal in Tassi to use a dredge, but it doesnt get policed here, so I flaunt the law I have a Keene 2 inch portable dredge and it moves a lot of material, I only work the centres of the creeks and rivers with it so I dont upset the pristine areas by under mining, I have a sluice with battery powered pump and that also works very well, I basically have all the gold gear to work any area, I mostly work the far West Coast of Tassi, and trek up to 2k's through thick bushland to get to places people cant be bothered going

I was in Bendigo on the weekend staying at bro/sis inlaws and BIL showed me his new you beaut $3500 detector, he also picked up a cheap Jeep for $600 so in his down time he is going prospecting around the area.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

I cant work out how Gold is found where it is when you see those shows of the Gold being found in places like Alaska and the Yukon.
Sunny Corner is barely a half hour drive from here with Sofala about 45 minutes and Hill End where the Holterman Nugget was found hour and a bit on.
Then theres places around Bathurst that you can find a 'show' then into Lucknow where it seems to go underground and Cadia where there is presently a working Gold Mine but its in quartz.
A mad prospecting friend showed me what he said were Gold flakes almost enough to cover a match head he said had panned out of the miniscule local creek over a few months.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

I would say finding Gold is 99.99% luck and the rest is good equipment, knowledge of the area, tectonics, etc.

Also Gold is not found on the side of the road unless the accompanying lady just lost some jewelry.

Some serious 4WD'ing and/or hiking is essential, so OB I hope the GF is fit in those.

My wife already complains when I drive over a speed hump at 20km/h. Therefore reliving the dream of my fossicking times from the 1980's seems pretty much out of the question.

Taken from a small Victorian stream with a 3" Keene and hooker - in the days before the Vic government deemed dredging to be antisocial.

Fortunately I never gave up my day job

Have tried detecting twice over the years, and both times got bored shitless within the first two hours of finding bottle tops, shotgun pellets, and baked bean cans.

Just use a pan now - should be interesting once the waters drop after this wet winter.

Still would prefer the dredge though....a lot easier on the back......although thrashing around in 10 degree water probably wouldn't be such fun these days

As a prospector I really enjoy hunting for gold, its not about having the gold its about finding the gold,
Agreed....there's some kinda buzz out of being the first human being to find and touch something that's been lying in the ground for millions of years.
