Anyone received a recall letter yet?
Friends of ours just received a letter from BMW, which prompted me to research about our own vehicle.
What a massive world wide recall.
More than 53 million cars are being recalled globally, including 34 million in the US alone.
Anyone here been though the process already?
News links here:
Australian Recall Link:
Apart from those of us with affected Vehicles, it may pose as useful information for those purchasing a second hand car.
EDIT: After doing more reading on this, that list i've posted is missing a LOT of vehicles!

I think they've been adding vehicles to the list in dribs and drabs for some time now. My other half had her Mitsubishi Lancer in to have the passenger side air bag replaced yesterday. The car is 12 years old and she received a letter in the mail advising her that the car was subject to a recall (she bought it new). There was a delay of some momths between being told the air bag needed replacement and getting a booking to have it fixed. I guess the dealer has one or two lucky mechanics (or more likely, apprentices) just doing this stuff all day every day at the moment.
It must be costing a small fortune. I don't know who is paying? If it's Takata, then I would have expected them to go broke very quickly. Can a manufacturer insure themselves against this sort of risk? Is each car maker paying for it out of their own pocket? I don't know.
Edit: the whole saga in chronological order is here:

Thanks shed, yeah i read that link you posted, it goes back a long way. But if it has a lot of vehicles missing from the list.
I too thought the same as you, that Takata would go broke, but holy crap, have you seen the size of the company and its profit!
Yes, many people got the letter, but have been told their are no parts available to preform the work.
In the USA, GM have applied for a 1 year extension because of the volume
So far, only people driving Hondas have been killed (or susupectedly killed) by the faulty air bag.
As you say, it as amazing how far back this goes, cars that 12 and 13 years old.
Our friends that got a letter from BMW are the 3rd owners of the vehicle that was purchased privately.
What a cluster f@#k of a situation.
I mean, the actual threat is obviously quite low, but the liability is high.

yea my 2009 triton has the same
our previous Lancer was affected , and we told the new owners about the recall letter , which didnt affect the sale in any way.
not all those cars will be affected fully though , i guess the Transport dept for each state would advise how many of those cars are scrap now and therefore no need to replace airbags
Been going on for a couple of years now. Started doing them in 2014 when at a stealership for Mitsubishi and Honda at the time
XCRUISER HDSR600HD twin sat and terrestrial receiver $OOS *
XCRUISER HDSR385 Avant - sold out$OOS UltraPlus DVB-T and DVB-S2 tuners $49 Remotes $OOS
had mine replaced a while back, took about 30 mts..Nissan xtrail
I watched some U tube videos on setting off airbags - these things go hard. So in the name of science i removed the drivers airbag from a dumped Commodore and set it off in my back yard using a 9v battery !! big bang and lots of white powder everywhere. cool.
Maybe this is what they are doing with the Takata Airbags they remove?
The last 2min i had tears streaming down my face, bahahahaha

Yes, i've heard all kind of fixes, from just replacing the Airbag Module to Total Airbag and inflator replacement
Thats why i was interested to start the topic here, to see what work had been done to members vehicles?
What happened in the workshop you worked in Leroy?

Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.

was your Terrano the grey import Japanese or the locally sold ( Spainish ) model ? may explain why its not on the list.
Spanish model. The 1997 Navara models are only on that news.com.au link. Can't find that confirmed anywhere else.

Here is an interesing thought
Just looking at buying an older Subaru for the daughter thats coming home
The vehicle hasn't had its airbag changed in the recall yet
The vehicle i'm looking at has just been issued with RWC.
As part of the RWC, they look for tears in the seat, any wear to seat belt, correct seat belt operation, etc etc
But apparently having a potentially life threatening airbag fitted is Road Worthy.
I wonder how that would play out in court if someone was injured by the airbag soon after the RWC was issued?

We got ANOTHER registered letter we had to sign for from Subaru Yesterday. They are sending 1 a week now.
Not going to have them touch the thing.
Mate works in a dealership and say there has never been a problem with the airbags fitted to any Subarus in the WORLD so far.
Also says that getting them out on the passengers side on anything more than about 5 YO WILL damage the dash and they will NOT warrant that. Very strict instructions from Subaru Aus only to replace the airbags and any damage or defects resulting from the replacement is up to the owners to have Remidied. He says there are often hairline cracks in the dashpad which are not obvious till you pull the thing out and then they can become very large and unsightly. Of course the stealers are paid a fixed amount for doing the job so the faster it's done the better. They don't care if the thing squeaks and rattles afterwards, again, that's the owners lookout.
Plenty of Dashpads in My fathers wrecking yard I can get but if I can't rely on them putting them back right, which I'm told they get heaps of complaints about, no point there either. I would do it myself if they would supply the modules but of course that's not going to happen. Stealers miss out on their labour for the job which mate tells me they are making fortunes out of.
Won't be bothering having mine done. Their have been bugger all problems with the millions of these things installed and the ones that went into my car are about as likely to be problematic as me winning the powerball tonight. Mrs wants a Turbo Forrester anyway so if the next owner is concerned, they can have it done.
The registered letters to have the things changed are an arse covering exercise. If you don't have them fixed and something happens, it's on you as they will have proof they alerted you.
Recalls and the like are not covered by roadworthys. If there is an obvious safety problem, then no rego for you, If it's something not on the checklist, not their problem.
Used to be you couldn't have a small steering wheel. No longer on the list. You can have something the size of 2 Bob now and that's for the police to worry about if they get you, not the guy inspecting the car for the safety ticket for rego. Same as headlight alignment. Not so long back you went for rego and the guy brought out a little box on wheels or drove the car up to a line and put the headlights on a wall that had lines marked on it to check the height and aim. Now half the cars on the road are blinding you with their lights aimed up in the air but that's OK apparently. Fking ridiculous.
