I'll simplify it then....
Any recommendations for a mobile phone with a good GPS?
I'm considering a Samsung S7... anyone with one that can comment on the GPS performance?
Criteria:
Must have very good GPS
4G, including 700MHz band
Good signal coverage, so Telstra I expect.
Yes, a dedicated GPS receiver is best and I already have a good one , but I do a bit of hiking and use an online app that needs accurate GPS info.
I'm used to android, but all suggestions welcome.

I have an S7 and like it. But have only had it for a couple of weeks, so cannot vouch for some of the more esoteric features. GPS in car using google works well, but that is not quite the same as you are looking for. FWIW I had a bit of fruit prior to this and the difference is like chalk and cheese, Give me Android any day.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
I've got a nexus 6, seems to do the trick, currently around $400 outright

Just to clarify.
I don't need off-road mapping... just as long as the GPS knows my position.
Interesting thread.
I would not have thought there was much difference in GPS ability between recent smart products?
When i travel, i generally have 2 if not 3 products that i can use to concur a finding.
They are all accurate.
Or are we talking with in meters?
Having other Samsung products, it happily have an S7 even though they come at a premium.
Ive also had experience with Google Nexus phones, which seemed to have fantastic GPS preformance

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
You'd think so, but it seems some work much better than others.
I have an Huawei P2 which works quite well, except the GPS function is next to useless, but interestingly, a mate with an iPhone also had no GPS signal recently at a location with a completely clear 360 deg view of the sky. My Garmin GPS worked fine.
The phone app I use requires GPS location to operate.
It doesn't need to be dead accurate, just needs to know an approximate position.
I've had an old Samsung S3 previously... crap phone, but the GPS and camera were good.

It is still my daily driver, and i agree, the GPS is good, once locked.
I also concur with a Samsung Tab 8
An Samsung S5
And Google Nexus 5
I use the Samsung Tab 8 for Off Line 4WD mapping and it is amazing!
You could almost drive off it.
It notices when you get out of the vehicle and walk a short distance, like 10 meters.
Thus i would expect the newer S6 and S7 would as good or better, but don't own one to try.

I would be going with the S7.
I have completed a full circle in what I buy. Started years ago with quality brand name only, drifted out to "bargain hunting" and am back again after the experience to state that "you get what you pay for".
Maybe also look at the new Google Pixel.
Be interested to hear your comments on performance.
The camera is the least important for me, but if what I end up with has a good camera, that would just be a bonus.
The priorities are GPS and network access in poor signal areas... Telstra's 4GX seems to be doing quite well.
Definitely inclined to agree.... been there, done that as well.
It just seems absurd the pricing of premium brands, given the technology of many of the cheapies these days.
I see the Samsung S8 is expected to be released in Australia around late Feb next year... only a few months away, so might hold off til then.
If for no other reason, the S7 should drop in price.
Battery life is excellent.
It's been off charge today for 14 hrs with light use and is at 78%.
The only issue I forgot to mention is sometimes the hotspot loses internet access and it seems to be a known Xiaomi issue. Going in and out of flight mode is the quickest solution I've found so far.
All I can really say about the GPS is that it works
