that's a poor way of doing it.

mine is a proper enclosure that takes either drive.

    google this:-

    and mine works.

maybe I should organize a bulk buy?

Hint...notebook SATA drive plugged to main board

yes...its recording to a notebook hard drive in 1080i...

what is NOT required to achieve this?

No stupid network or linux shares, no crazy file systems....just the remote control and bang....off she goes....

This is seriously good shit folks......
z80, thanks for the great info!

I'm interested to know about the recording UI, does it work like a proper PVR? i.e. can you record from EPG? Set up a proper EPG (for a full week or 2)? Schedule recurring recordings to record a show every time it's on?

Can the HD be mounted internally on the SF918 or is the esata connector externally? Where is the drive powered from?

from what i could see from the pictures there seems to be no power for it internally and would need an external case with external power like the usb2 setup

Jack chiles...I have NFI but I am using a beta image.

It records when i tell it to, not when it feels like it like some boxes.

Word is it will serve and have other features as the images progress.

But for now...I just plugged in a notebook 500 gig drive today and it works.

that was through my external esata connector.

esata is not a powered interface, you always need an external psu guys.

Of course i will mount it internally and splice the 5v power lead what else am I to do when the missus is away all week?

power lead is removeable, figure of 8 type.

For the record eSATA is merely a type of connector that restricts the length you can use.

From the pcb is a standard sata connector translated to an eSATA back plate. Therefore mount internally easy..........

ah so no issue with just disconnecting from the main board and using a sata lead from a pc to mount internally? I was hoping there was a try internally like the DM7020 for example where a drive could sit.
Also is did you check the hd to see if files are .ts format or is it a proprietry std?

Hi All.. long time lurker, first time poster.

I have ordered one of these from a local supplier and will give my newbie report when delivered next week.

I'm really excited and going away for a few days (almost wish no holiday so I could be home to welcome the beast!)

that's why i went for the caddy option, so i could pull it out the h.d., slip it into another one connected to the pc and burn away...

so you can read the files? What type are they? I had the idea of copying them to my NAS and then they could be accessed anywhere in the house by a DM

There's an Openbox pvr that records to a usb hd and the files are .ts! I thought that's fantastic so you can see why I was hoping....bummer.

And another Q for 918 owners. How well does the box handle 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio channels? Does it automatically change like a DM7020? I get sick of changing it manually on the TV.
