I was wonder what peoples thoughts are on prices of insurance for modified cars.
Some of the prices and excess quoted are ridiculous.
Anyone have any personal recomendations?

Because your local Godzilla, you would be aware of shannons, and for many years they were the only ones who would do modified, but now I believe there are a few around. If all else fails they are okay to deal with but sometimes pricey.
Cheers
Yes shannons give a resonable deal (specially if you mention your Skyline forum member) but ive found them far from the cheapest.
What i dont like is that ive found the price varies on the day depending on how they feel and who you speak to.
The deals they give however are far from optimal, there are cheaper options with lower excess charges that im looking for.
Just cars only cover the car for half of its market value and dont even ask about the excess. It may sound cheap when you hear the price but cover...what cover?
Yes im trying to find those new ones that are not well publisised.
Maybe insurance brokers? Not exactly sure.
I found Shannons to be the best deal for my Z3 , I got a cheaper premium because I only drive it a couple of times a week. But its not modified.
I can remember trying to insure my LH Torana SLR 5000 when I was in my early 20's.......one good thing about getting older iscar insurance gets a lot cheaper
A mate who has a corvette was telling me about some but I cant remember the names I will ask him when I see him.
I recently insured a hard one, i listed the modifications as accessories..
supercharger,19 in wheels,koni shocks,6 piston calipers.
the company...AAMI
im 18 +lots of testosterone
Mitsubishi FTO GPX is the car with a fair few mods from complete jap exhaust to complete intake.
Just cars:
Comprahensive:$4100
Third Party fire and theft: $ 600
I used to have my Mustang insured with Shannons but got a better deal with Vigil 2 years ago. Another 1 to check out is Torque and 1 of my mates has his 2 Mercury Cougars insured with NRMA believe it or not,
EDIT
My wife tells me that Vigil has changed its name to LSV insurance
Hi Guys,
I've had Many cars insured with Vigil Insurance which is now Lumley Special Vehicles. A Modified RX7 a Subaru Forester XT Luxury, a Modified Mazda 1300, and by far they give the best deals. Also got a quote for my Sisters Mazda 323 Astina, and they had a saving of about $500 from them.

When I was 19 I built my first modified car 1972 LJ GTR (genuine) Torana with a stroked 308.That was before there became a rash of those cars. Ran a Top loader gearbox and a 9 inch, extractors, dual 2 1/2 inch exhaust and also on 100Hp of the bottle.. best quote I could get at the time was $2200 a year.. They would have owned that car in 3 or so years.. So who did I go with?? Well nobody, Just gave up on that one and took the risk.I'd say I'd be way ahead at the moment ..
So far, so good and with the way gas prices may go I will only be able to drive these cars once a month
Hey Acer,
Its always a gamble when you don't take insurance out, but all it takes is one incident and then you will be sorry. Speaking from experience when I lost my HT 350 Bathurst pack Monaro in 1986 to a pack of professional thieves. I only drove it once in a while but I would drag it at Calder, so I thought why bother until that day when the car was taken from my back yard.
the problem with not haveing insurance is not your car thats your problem but what about the poor bastard you hit ???????
if you hit my car and wrote it off you would be paying for it for the rest of your life
they should make third party insurance compulsory
Or not have expensive, unrealistic cars that cost more that 2 years wages
Anyway TAS if I hit your car and wrote it off it would be because you were in the wrong as I'm a good, safe driver
Yes I would be more worried more about theft than having an accident. Not that getting the car stolen would be the problem, it's just the fact that having to go out in the middle of the night and dump some clowns body into a hole is just a real pain in the ass.
In any case.. sorry to hear about that HT Monaro.
Thanks AceR, it was my pride and joy and took 3 years to build. In its former life it was shown in Street machine magazine before I transformed it to a street and strip car.
Love the comment about dumping the body, if I ever found the scumbags who flogged my car, there would be no body to dump, but I'd make a few trips to a mates chrome plating factory the acid works really well on ..........
i use Shannons too
AAMI and BMW insurance was about $2000 and Shannons $1000 or so
same car, same type insurance?
Go Figure....
i also only drive mine a few days a week, that seemed to be the "in" with Shannons,
Less risk of an accident i guess
also its stock standard.
What car Lee?
Did you need to specify which days or how many?
How much are you covered for if you dont mind me asking.
RX330
It is Hire Purchased company car, used to visit customers, say once a week and a couple of other outings during the week.
I felt that if it was a day to day car, ie to and from work, either the premium was going to be much more expensive or i wasnt going to get accepted for insurance from shannons.
Covered for about $50k
They were very insistant that "you had to be a car enthusiast"
and it is had to be "garaged" as well.
It may not be the best value policy but my other options were shockers
several years ago, hmmmm...... about 20yrs ago, i had a LX 253 torana, and that cost me about $400 then for insurance, i was 20yo, and that car was only insured for $5k
Don't let your own driving skills get confused with mine. If you think you can't go down the road without hitting somthing and being at fault, then be my guest and get all the insurance you need. I hear you can now get insurance against being hit by space junk that may plummet to earth now and again. Maybe you should look into getting that as well. Afterall you don't want to be one of those "idiots" without it now, do you?
