Default Wii exploit - Homebrew code running

At the 24th Chaos Communication Congress (24c3) some guys with a interesting presentation showing there home brew code running on the Wii in Wii mode. Currently only homebrew has been able to run on it in GC mode with access to only the GC hardware.

Here is a youtube vid of the presentation.

Just ordered a "Wiikey SD Card Adapter for Wii" from dealextreme since it looks like the way homebrew code will be ran on the Wii at the start. I am jumping the gun a bit but I want to be able to play with this the first day the exploit is publicly released.

Cannot wait, although I'm thinking I might try wait a bit longer before getting the Gecko. Any idea how reliable modding a GC official memory card into a SD adaptor is if it's done decently?

If done well, it would be 100%. From what i have seen, only the contacts are 're-wired'/swapped.

But as said above, you can get them pretty cheap....for those of us who are lazy

    Cheers, RHCP.

That is rather cheap, maybe I'll just buy the Gecko then :P I finally managed to track down a Gamecube memory card today, strangely enough it was even an original! I was reading that if you just swap the pins you can't save normal save games to it? On one made yourself I mean

Does this mean that the Wii won't have to be modified to run the code?
Or is it used in conjunction with a modded Wii?

At this stage the exploit needs the drive modchip since the exploit is ran from a DVD-R.

If/When they get code to run from the memory card there will be no need for the drive modchip for homebrew *ran from the memory card*

To play DVD-R backup or DVD-R homebrew you will still need a drive modchip for that.

Thanks for the reply.I fitted a Wiinja V2 clone chip to my Wii last February,if I want to dump my bought games do I need the Wiikey?
I've already ordered the Gecko and it says that it dumps with all mod chips, but which program does it use if I don't have the Wiikey DVD?

You can download the Wiikey DVD from all over the net. You need to run DVDdump of the Wiikey DVD then swap over to your original game disk and start dumping. Make sure you have a large SD card or else it will take forever.

Oh,I didn't know that software on the Wiikey DVD would work with the Wiinja V2.I'll give it a go then when my Gecko arrives.I've got a 2gb SD card, that should do right?

2GB over 4.7 GB will mean you have to do it in 3 chunks.

Is that really a problem or should I get a bigger card?

Try it out first. If it is only a few games the added time will not be a problem.

I believe 2 GB is the maximum reliable/usable size.
