Naa.. Google uses now this to get every possible angle :
Have seen this car a few times and the 'roof rack thing' kept catching my eye.
Today, I saw it in front of me again and decided to take immediate action!
I pulled out the phone and took a few shots whilst driving a motorcycle at 70kms with one hand, so not the best no flames please...
It must have four cameras. Whilst only one (rear near side), is seen from the angle of the camera shot, the 'bevel' of the unit would indicate another lens is at the (front near side), and I could see the 'bevel' edge at the (off side rear).
The lens had a red sheen to it.
Nice (what appears to be a), heat sink at the rear.
There was a guy driving with a female passenger. From the brief glimpse I got inside there didn't appear to be any on dash displays nor did I see any uniform markings that stood out.
So just curious as to what this roof mounted 4 camera device is up to.
Car from rear.
Car close.
Roof close.

The google camera cars have a big golfball-looking thing that sticks way up in the air, this photo (below) is from the US but you can see the same setup in Australian images as a shadow on the road sometimes...
That car you photographed wouldn't take very good photos from what I can see, half the picture would be obscured by the end of the roof rack?
If it had aerials I'd almost say it was an RDF pod, but it doesn't. Might be an ANPR system I guess, but again, the roof rack looks like it would obscure the part of the picture where number plates are usually mounted?
Andrew
You missed 1 vital clue , it has a UBER sticker on back window..

Okay then... so who or what is an "UBER"?
Could be some kind of cop technology checking rego licence fines etc ???

Is it in Brisbane?
Sorry Tiny. It's not when I accesses it through Firefox, I have no account with them. Ah, it is now..
The initial click does bring up a html generator png page then paywalled:
It was a story in the Courier Mail about Uber Mapping being rolled out. Here is another link to Uber Mapping on the Gold Coast

UBER isnt an 'AN' but an 'IT'.
It's a system that allows you, me and the person next door to set up as an unofficial, unlicensed, unregulated Taxi service.
'IT' started overseas a few years ago and is now here in OZ.
I am very surprised this information doesnt seem to have reached the burrows in Wombat Crescent as yet but there is hope it will in the future.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Nomeat, now I know that this was an Uber car, doing street mapping - and now - hoping to be 'seen' on their internal maps. However, I do seek great solace in the fact that I am already digitized (for a brief moment in Google time), within the vast worldwide databanks of Google Maps.
I saw the Google car driving up the road as I was doing work on the garage roof
