    Default Annoying chime

When I purchased a new Berlina a while ago I found that if you start the car without having FIRST fastened your seatbelt a very loud annoying chime sounds for 15 seconds or until you lock it in. Here in QLD it's not uncommon to start the car first to get the all important air conditioning going. At it's first service I asked for the chime to be disabled and was amazed when I was told initially that it was not technically possible. When pressed the dealership said that, by law, they were not permitted to disable it as it was mandated by the Australian Design Rules to remind the driver the put on a seat belt.

Anyone have a similar thing or any comment, are we such babies now that we need a nagging reminder to do things that come naturally to most of us and where will it stop. Perhaps an enging immobiliser fitted to operate as soon as you answer your mobile from the drivers seat.

Had a similar problem when I got a new honda accord 10 years ago. Bitched to the dealer who said if it got disconnected all other chimes went too...such as headlights left on chime. As I wanted this we compromised and they put some tape over it to halve the volume. Still pisses me off to this day (especially as the tape fell off some years ago)

slightly similar annoyance is my xr6 ute....

Now most cars have the beeping when running low on fuel, mine is 80km, 40km, 20km and 0km... its annoying but lasts only 5 seconds or less...

imagine my surprise when I run out of water in the windscreen wiper bottle... the f'ing thing wont stop beeping until it filled up... non stop. I was on a trip back from the country and it happened too me, middle of no where really had to put up with it for about 40mins until I found some run down servo

I give bonus points for the engineer that developed it...

A Guess what the conversation must have been like
Boss: Ok, engineers whats important for this car..

engineer1: first we better have an alarm to warn the owner its running low on fuel... lets have it beep for about 5 seconds that should get owners attention

    Boss: good thinking engineer one..

engineer two: also we better have an alarm to warn of empty wiper bottle. not sure what duration the owner should be warned for though...

boss: yep thats good too..I leave it to you to figure out the right amount of warning noise

engineer two: leave it too me boss

amazes me, which would be more critical, running out of fuel, or not having (water in the) wipers?

    god bless engineers!!!!

I had a Daewoo that if you opened the door with the keys in the ignition you would think that WW3 had started. I supposed it stopped you getting out and leaving the keys but you couldn't lock it without the keys.

I forgot to say that on the occasions I forget to fasten seat belt first and chimes sound an even louder and more annoying sound eminates from the front passenger's seat.

MrsRadio has a morbid fear of flying and reckons we should sue Holden because those chimes remind her of the chimes used on aircraft prior to announcements etc.

I wonder? Stranger cases have got up

just short the wires on the switch in the clip, sure it won't be too hard.

Im not sure but the airbags could need that info, if it has them.

We had a skyline which had an annoying reversing beep, we just cut and taped up the wires from the speaker.

If it is still under warranty be careful because it may void it. The technician may go looking for the fault whilst it is in for a service.

I can make up a simple circuit to make it do no chimes for a minute or an hour upon you turning ignition on if you like?

Basically a 555 timer in monostable mode energising a relay for 60 seconds when 12volts applied...after 60 seconds monostable times out and restores chime ability.

Electronics 101, or grab a Dick smith kit for about $10

Firstly dont play with the buckle switch as in some cars it can interfere with things such as airbags and stability control overrides (some cars sense the buckle going down towards the floor and set off specialised emergency braking commands, seatbelt pretensioners etc).

Many cars use a standard beltminder (trademark) program.
I know some Fords and Toyotas use the same one and the same method to disable the buzzer.

Not sure if Holden uses the same one but may be worth a try.

These are the steps you need to follow to deactivate or activate your Belt Minder system. Before doing so, make sure that:
    The parking brake is set.
The car is in Park (automatic), Neutral (manual).
    The ignition is OFF.
    All doors are closed.
The driver's safety belt is un-buckled.
The parking and headlights are OFF.
    Then follow these steps:

1/ Turn the ignition switch to ON, but DO NOT START.
2/ Wait for the safety belt warning light to go OFF(1-2 minutes).
Steps 3-5 MUST be completed within 60 seconds!

3/ Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
4/ Turn on the headlights, turn off the headlights.
5/ Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
After step 5, the Safety Belt Warning Light will be turned on for 3 seconds.

6/ Within 7 seconds of the safety belt warning light turning OFF, buckle then un-buckle the safety belt.
This will disable the Belt Minder if it is currently enabled, or enable the Belt Minder if it is currently disabled.

7/ Confirmation of the disabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds.
Confirmation of the enabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds, followed by 3 seconds with the safety belt light off, then followed by flashing the safety belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds again.
8/ After confirmation, the deactivation/activation of the Belt Minder procedure is complete.

Give it a go, wont hurt to try.

    GZ:

My brother works for a beer company... (yes free beer) NOW if only i could get someone in my family to open a brothel I'd be set

anyway.. because he works out of his car alot, he has the exact problem, that when parked and he has A/C on (car running), and needs to use his phone, plus organiser etc, he gets the beeping would this technic work for him. I mean does this permanently switch the beeping off (aka if he runs through your steps)

Also I just suggested to him to by another belt bucket and insert that when he needs to be able to move freely around

his is an 07/08 Ford Wagon??

The beltminder system is a U.S. Ford trademark and licence is sold to other car companies (to keep Ford shareholders happy).

Im not sure if Holden uses it, but i am aware that some manufacturers such as Mazda use specialised manufacturers software to enable or disable the system via laptop. Havent heard of anyone driving into a dealership and having any luck switching the system off due to safety requirements.

I dont know if aussie Fords use it...they should in my opinion.
Yes its permenent and by repeating the procedure you can select between on or off.

Yeah another old buckel will do the job just fine

It was a simple process of.
    1 / hold hazard lights
2 / insert key and go to on.
3 / plug in and unplug seat belt 7 times..
    4/ switch of ignition
this is from memory - but it was defiantly 7 times with seat belt
