    Default Video Intercom

    G'day

    After some advice/help...
Brand new home prewired for video intercom...
    Camera unit outside...
Inside home - 2 receiver units... upstairs and the other downstairs...

I am after a kit... how much do they usually cost? can those ebay units do the job & do they come with everything required like brackets etc etc...

thinking, if its not too hard, maybe i can install it myself... unsure about the power source...

    Thanks

easy enough to install, just 5 or 6 wires get a good quality unit though I've got a colour lcd jaycar unit and its absolute crud, it cost a fair bit too

    Cool

Have a good look at the orientation of your house. About half the vid i/cs I see are useless for much of the time because the camera is staring into the sun or reflected sun from concrete. They are not a quality camera & it doesn't take much to make them white out. Other than that you will get what you pay for. If it is running over ordinary 4 core (as against cat5) take the stated range with a grain of salt & try to get handsfree internal stations.

sorry to hijack your post punjabiz, but Wdog reminded me of a job I did in the eastern suburbs Sydney earlier on this year.

Installed the video intercom in record time as I was offered lunch by a good looking female sales rep, only to find on power up it had just a white screen with a black line through the middle.

I pulled the unit off the wall to check connections, and well it started working, when I mounted it back on the wall, that white screen reappeared.

I seriously must have done this 3 or 4 times until I realised that the intercom was looking at a white wall with a black joint down it.....

Seadan sell a color intercom for a fraction of the price of Aiphone called D.Vice same 12 month warranty, haven't had any complaints so far, the D.Vice also comes with day/night door station and have the option for handsfree operation.

Hey Fastwrx, are you going to let us know which company the good looking female rep works for?

Unfortunately the security industry generally tends to be a bit of a "sausage fest"........

Perhaps it might be worth changing alarm panels / CCTV / access control for.

    Sorry to get off topic.....
Perhaps I should start a thread - "Girls of the Security Industry 2008"

    Back on topic.
One of the problems with the consumer type DIY intercoms (like the Videoman etc) is that they tend to come with big chunky power supplies which need to be mounted fairly close to the monitor. Ususally 1 x 1 Amp per monitor. Quite often unregulated and mostly not switch mode.
Finding somewhere to put these can be a pain, as they usually do not come with any mounting hardware. Placing them in the roof space above the monitor is probably not a good idea.............

The more expensive units have a centralised power supply for multiple monitors / door stations which can be wall or DIN rail mounted in a pantry or cupboard.
    Makes for a cleaner install.

From the feedback that I have recieved regarding those cheapy Ebay things is that you probably won't get much more than a year or so out of them before they die.
Quite often if one bit dies (like 1 monitor) you will no longer be able to get any more to match. Which means pulling the whole lot and putting something else in.

Least Aiphone has been around for yonks, and you still see installations of 10+ years old still going.

    Damned expensive though............
(Extremely good picture too compared to the cheapies)

All depends how much you want to spend. The colour Aiphone will make your eyes water when you see the price compared to the Ebay prices. (As will all of the top end intercom stuff)

Oh yeah, I also forgot -
No matter what brand you get, make sure it is a metal outdoor (camera) station, rather than plastic.
Stainless steel or Aluminimum is fine.
The plastic nearly always fades and dis-colours over time.
If it does last a few years, it ends up looking pretty bad.
