Default Sony VCR problem; Euras site info

I have a Sony SLV-T2000MN/AS with a problem. I am reluctant to trash the unit because it is still used regularly, and being a dual deck & twin tuner it is great.

Occasionally when a tape rewinds, the tape loops and the cassette ejects, with part of the tape still inside. I've had the cover off and cleaned the pinchwheels etc. but the problem still occurs.

The fault is listed for the model on the Euras site, but it appears I need to sign up for a subscription to find the cure.

Anyone who has access to this site, or can provide any other suggestions/advice would be appreciated. PM if interested in looking at the unit (I'm north of Melbourne).

    Damien

Without knowing the machine, I'd suggest you take a look at the back tension band.
It's a white band that wraps around the supply reel table - and provides some braking of the reel. It sounds like what is happening is when you wind the cassette, the supply table isn't being braked properly, and is allowing the tape to spill out when it should be taut.

Thanks guys. I'll pull the cover off an have another look.

Couldn't see anything obvious the first time, but then I wasn't entirely sure what else to look at aside from cleaning the pinch wheel and pins ........

the back tension only is active during playback not during rewind, look at the idler assembly the brake pads or even the preloading arm(if it has one)this holds the tape near the control head and given enough time becomes very sticky nothing that a bit of lub wont fix.

There is a little guide pulls the tape around the AC head and the grease drys out and it dont release on eject and chews tape on eject,
If its not that its the reel brakes or mode switch.
I have seen back tension bands shed their felt and bind up the supply reel.
So listen to me and all others here dude

have a look at the small pin on a arm thats near the control/erase/audio head stack. it gets sticky as the grease binds up. just try moving it by hand and see if it moves freely back and forth. if not, remove the split ring on the top, lift it up a bit and use a few drops of crc to free it up. refit the clip.
then check the reel drive idler and make sure it moves back and forth between the reels freely.
