Have always wondered the same thing.
The only conclusion I can come up with is maybe they themselves were fiddled with or much worse?
Those days there was no internet, cameras and social media, no counselling and mental health people the scale of how we have today, and was totally different coming out and saying this or that priest did this or that to me -- as many of you guys have pointed out in this thread. Different time and you'd get beaten up by your own parents for saying good old priest from the church down the road played with me.
Maybe this is the pathology behind it? Could have been going on for hundreds of years already and has been "passed down" all this time.
Sometimes what you see with other bad behaviour is the bad-acting/deviant person had something happen to them. Humans all react differently to things that happen to them. Not everybody experiences a bad experience as necessarily bad, or the experience is so hideous the mind processes it in an unexpected way. And this is where the lines get blurred.
Don't get me wrong, not saying one bad thing justifies another. Just trying to understand it.
