Exactly. Every person who has a computer infected with this ransomware has got it by ignoring the advice that IT people have been giving them for at least the last fifteen years.

There are people working in those departments that were hit who might have to open hundreds of emails a day and read the attachments.

Also I would prefer that underfunded hospitals attempt to invest in medical equipment rather than wasting their limited resources on purchasing new computers and software
    licences every 3 years.
So good on them for keeping their old XP systems alive that still do the same job as the new ones and also for Microsoft who released the tool and finally the patch despite their 'end of support' policy, although it might have come too late for some.

Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.

I have machines stuck on XP sp2 x86 - No patch for them and they rely on Port 445.
I have Isolated as much as I can for now.

Do you have a reason for not upgrading to SP3?

    If so, what is it?

Old version of Citect Scada, Quoted $60k to upgrade to current version with no hardware.
I ran the regedit mods, but had random freezing issues with netbios I think.
Computers are firewalled from the internet and will be isolated from internal network soon.

I had no idea what Citect Scada was until I looked it up.

Yes, I too am running Windows XP SP 2, because I found (at the time) that certain software did not like SP3.

    Thanks for the reply.

I found "Windows Worm Door Cleaner"
It checks if known ports are open and gives you a chance to close them.
When I get more time, I will close open ports one at a time on one machine to see if there is any issues.

    I grabbed it from

By the same token, you can't get into a car accident if you stay out of a car!

Simple fix indeed but simply impossible if software one chooses to or has to use is written to run under Windows rather than other operating systems, which is the case in some instances.

Actually I was killed in an accident when I was not driving! FWIW, we were stationary at a Police Road Block with a Road Train Pulling Out onto the Highway in front of us. So, the only other thing I could have done is not even be anywhere near a road., Now, BOT.

Sadly, there are those who think, "It can't happen to me" and act accordingly. Like the idiot who parked on top of us, He had driven whilst pickled on other occasions and gotten away with it. Anything you do on a computer is liable to become someone else's property, whether you want it to or not. It amazes me that someone gets a message from "Microsoft" and actually thinks that Billy has chosen them for some reason......
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Use your windows machine to run your programs but keep it off the net , use a flavour of Linux for your net ie downloads , banking and general net stuff.

Wine works for many things, however, adding another layer between the program and its intended target may not be possible. e.g. if you have a windoze program that communicates directly with a Wigwam that talks to the gooses Bridle, The Wigwam may not recognise the prorgram if it uses a virtual machine which is exactly what Wine is.

Correct, a lot of programming software that requires precise timing via an interface, eg: serial port, will not work with a VM.
Generally a USB to serial adapter is enough to cause problems....

Yes, I have heard of Wine.

I also have a Linux machine as well as several Macs.

However a virtual machine is not always a feasible way to run some Windows-based programs.

Thanks to lsemmens and hoe for explaining this in further detail than I would have.

Yes, in particular programs which utilise timing loops, wait states etc. to generate subroutine delays will not take kindly to using a virtual machine.

seriously, xp was released 16 years ago and was superseded by vista in 2006......

anyone running it , or any other o/s that old, on the internet is asking for trouble......

all the linux fanboys with their 'don't use windows' preaching, should realise this. after all, are they still running red hat 7.1 or mandrake 8.0 ?, shit they were basic (pun intended)........
