They were also at Llandilo down the road here on ~16MHz during the 90's.

Yep, they (a new consortium) ran the new version of VNG from there on 2.5, 5, 8.6, 13 and 16MHz in the 90's..

HI all thought I'd share this, finally built an antenna and played around with spectrum lab today, and believe that I've found NWC @ 19.8Khz

what I found interesting was the signal was stronger during the middle of afternoon, I went back about two hours later to find the signal again and it seemed weaker.

I've used the SAQ receiver file contained in the receiver, along with a 1 sq mtr home made antenna, with 22 turns of .5mm copper wire.

forgot to add, the strong signal you can on the left is the TV, the weaker signal on the right is the 19.8 Khz of which I believe is North West Cape.

    cheers

Been a while since I checked my thread.

Yes even from Mackay I get NWC quite strong. It's the strong but fuzzy line at the far right.

The curvy line around 4K is the neighbours power drill.

I found the circuit from an old EA the other day for a VNG based clock and timing source.

interesting wavy lines there on the left!!

are you able to post some pics of your antenna with some spec's??

I'm using one that's basically been thrown together and would like to build a better quality antenna so to speak....for better accuracy!

Hi Osci, one of the best antennas I've tried so far seems to be a helical wound on a cylinder and the core stuffed with ferrite rods. In the photo the best one is the long thin helical. It's about 78cm long, 20mm dia PVC with ferrite rods in the core. It's wound with over 155 metres of 0.3mm enamel copper wire. Works out to about 1800 turns I think it was.

Although the 80 metre wire dipole works well too.

The helical is directional and the polarity seems to make a difference also. I pick up static from lightning much better horizontal and broadside to the source. You wouldn't believe how far away you can pick up lightning. If the lightning trackers are anything to go by, it's thousands of Km away.

I haven't got around to building a low Q antenna for Schumann resonances yet. I even bought some low noise op-amps from Hong Kong for the job. I've been side tracked by building weather satellite receiving equipment.

I've actually collected quite a range of funny and interesting screen caps from VLF over the last few months. From drills to vacuum cleaners, car's alternators, PLC switching for the hot water system, all sorts of funny things.

Mmm, sometimes these image shack pics don't show up, so I'll direct link em.

Here's a few screen captures as mentioned.

    Vacuum cleaner at 14KHz.

If you look carefully at this next cap, around 2k there's four upside down ticks. This was taken at my sister's place and had us baffled for a while, until we realised they were the call from Kerloos. There does seem to be some translation of audio to RF if the sound is loud enough. In this case the antenna acting as a microphone.

My bro in law arrived home in the car and this is what it looked like.

    More power drill caps.

Blocks of line harmonics and a very strong NWC. Not sure what causes the harmonics to show like that. Could be neighbourhood power usage or possibly PLC (Power Line Communication).

Worm at 7 - 12 KHz. Probably a motor spinning up of some sort.

Lots of static from a storm a few hundred K away.

    Another motor at 13K.

Cheap Chinese CRT TV set. Spews carp from DC to daylight.

    Mobile phone.

    Camcorder focusing and zooming.

    Don't know. It has harmonics.

Touch pad from the PC at 3K but the thing at 11-18 K I have no idea. Almost looks like a picture trying to form.

Lots of lightning with a feather. Too slow to be a whistler. I think.

PLC for hot water switching at 317 Hertz with harmonics. Found this out as my cousin's husband works at Ergon.

    Another feather in the lightning.

Motor of some sort I presume at 3K.

More distinct harmonic blocks. PLC I guess.

Really long worm. Motor or powertool, something like that.

    Zigzag worm.

    Dunno.

Cool worms with babies and lightning.

Notice one of the lightning strokes is broken or dotted. I think this is sprite activity.

    Megawatt vacuum cleaner from neighbours.

    NWC transmission change!

    Fluro light warming up.

    Enjoy.

Gee Learjet, I must admire your patience to place 1800 windings so neat and tidy next to each other.
Have you tried the performance of a tuned loop antenna similar to what I described above in comparison to the ferrite cores to pick up a particular frequency like from the subs?

Well you know me, too much time on my hands.

I was going to build a minimal loop for Schumann Resonances like the one here. As mentioned I have the OP27 op-amps, just need a BIG spool of enamel copper wire, like 3 km worth!

I'm sure it would be superior to the helical as it has 20 times the wire length and a preamp on the front to boot. One day maybe.
