Movie Editing Software

Just curious about what would the best Movie editing software for a beginner like me to use. I am going to try and make a movie for my Grand Final winning footy team. I have used Windows Movie Maker before, with OK results, but want to try and use something a bit better than WMM. I just want to have a few clips, a few stills, nice transitions a couple of effects with some music over top. Also free or available on news groups would be great.

Without going all the way to Adobe Premiere, i use Ulead video studio

yes it can be a pain at times, but i find they're all the same.
