Here's another question -
If cameras are viewable anywhere on the planet (either IP cameras, or through the DVR), by many numbers of people, are they truly "Closed circuit" any more???????
Undoubtedly.
It's the same with the phone system.
Some people are happy to do phone banking using DTMF codes over a land line - but won't use highly secured encyption to do online banking.
I don't think people are aware of how vunerable standard land lines are.....
Buuuut that actually wasn't the point I was making.
Wikipedia defines Closed Circuit tele vision as:
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point wireless links.
Many DVRs can be set up to allow (if required) anybody to log in without username and password to view live images. Therefore it would then have more in common with broadcast TV.
Something to ponder perhaps.............
Or perhaps not.
Then it wouldn't be CCTV it'll just be an expensive webcam.
Wiki defines webcams as follows;
Web-accessible cameras involve a digital camera which uploads images to a web server, either continuously or at regular intervals. This may be achieved by a camera attached to a PC, or by dedicated hardware. Analog cameras are also sometimes used (often of the sort used for closed-circuit television), connected to a video capture card and then directly or indirectly to the internet.
Based on my experience of forum questions, my suggestion for a better title would be "CCTV, DVR's and IP Cameras"
....just my 2 peneth
