    Default re: austech data base

I have spoken to a number of data recovery companies in regards to our drives and hope to be taking some action next week as i will have the drives then. Our host refused to send the drives after i bought them from them so i had to open a fedex account to go and get them to pick them up from the Netherlands which wasnt cheap.

i intend to send the drives to andrew who is personally taking them to a melbourne based data recovery centre who are going to take a look at them and do a brief assesment as to exactly what the problem is with them. The drives are scsi and were in raid0 config which means that both drives are going to have to be used and repaired to recover data. Unless the problem is very basic the drives will then need to have a lot of indepth work performed on them.

Although the drives havent been looked at yet it is expected the bill could be anywhere between $500 and $3500. It will cost $500 to have a technician examine them in a clean roon enviroment and prepare a report and quotation if the data is recoverable. i take total responsability for not being prepared for this disaster but admit i am going to struggle if i have to come up with the higher amount and in all honesty dont know if I can in the near future.

this leaves me with a couple of options which include trying to get a loan or asking members for donations to try and help get the amount down to a lower level i might be able to afford or getting the quote and storing the drives until i can raise enough money to pay the bill if it is recoverable.

Asking for financial donations is not something I am comfortable doing however I do need to ask how many people would make a donation to get the data back so i can work out which way to go with this. although austech doesnt make a lot of money it does make some through Google ads which pays the server cost and this has dropped by 50% due to a lack of people finding information they are looking for via google on the site due to the missing threads which doesnt give me much hope of the site even breaking even. if the data isnt recoverable we will have to look at cheaper and less powerfull hosting options.

So what i am asking is are many members prepared to make a financial donation to help out ? I am keen to do my best to get it back but as it stands i dont have a lot to go with. i think if I can raise $500 to get it looked at and get the problems diagnosed and quoted it would be the best short term option.

please dont ask for any further information in regards to where it is going etc as we have had enough problems with idiots as it is ringing our host during our downtime trying to imperonate both myself and andrew.

thanks for your replies and thoughts

    Paul

Even a drovers dog could recover a fault with a RAID 0 array.

(it will be a single stripe usually)

I would be very surprised to hear that it was more than $500.

Just tell us the model of drive.

Raid 0 is a crime in a data center by the way.

i would be very surprised if a drovers dog could recover data from 2 dead drives that arent recognized by bios or operating system. I also wont be risking having anyone try to recover data or attempt repair that doesnt do it for a fulltime job. As with most things no one likes taking things for repair with a bag full of parts with the ' my mate had a look at it ' reason.

If its $500 great I couldnt be happier. But I would maybe take a look at professional data recovery prices particuarly for raid and know what the problem is before saying you would be surprised if its more than $500.

It would be a crime to lose years of collective knowledge for the sake of a few bucks. Count me in for a Goldie.

Paul, you will set up a backup system from now on, won't you?

It would be funny if it wasn't so serious.
