    Default NTSC Analog Camera

Hi, I have a PC with a PCI 8 port capture card, I normally use PAL cameras but a friend has a NTSC camera he doesn't need.
Can anyone foresee any issues using a NTSC camera?

    Thank you

When a PAL receiver is used to pick up NTSC transmissions it can cause more problems, with the potential visual effects being a black and white picture, 'rolling' screen, a 'tearing' screen, or blank screen.

This will be the effect if you try to connect a NTSC camera to an analog PAL TV or DVR.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I understand the problem occurs with TV's and the like, but the fact its going into the PC, I would have thought it would accept PAL & NTSC without a problem?

Most capture cards, and many DVRs have a Global setting for NTSC OR PAL.
I.E all cameras PAL, or all NTSC.

This is ususally auto-sense (detect what is on Cam 1 for instance) or a menu setting.

I haven't seen any that can do both at the same time (i.e 1 NTSC & 5 PAL for instance).

We had a customer with an ATM text output that only did NTSC. So we wanted a device that could take one NTSC and the rest PAL. We looked around for a while and gave up. It was easier just to buy a NTSC to PAL convertor.

If it is a free camera, you would spend more money on a convertor than the camera is worth (unless it is an extremely high end or specialised camera)

phm, thanks for the reply. Its not a free camera he wanted a few $ for it. The camera was this model

I might not worry about it, as it may end up just causing me problems.

    Thanks.

I did an install a couple of months back that the client provided the cameras for. They gave me 4 NTSC cameras and a PAL DVR. To my suprise everything worked fine.

You will find that many DVR will have the ability to have either PAL or NTSC cameras.
That way they don't have to have a different model for both regions of the world.

Some of the record settings will possibly change as well, depending on the mode.
I.E if your max PPS was 100 under PAL mode, if you power up in NTSC mode it may go to max of 120 PPS. (Max res might also go down i.e 720 x 576 max becomes 720 x 480 max)

Normally you just connect the cameras up and it automatically selects one or the other on power-up.
So it might default to PAL mode, but still be able to operate in NTSC.

The problem occurs when you want to mix NTSC and PAL on the same system.
