I was having that same problem yesterday, but it seems to be OK today. Running Firefox on win 8.1, didn't try it on Linux unfortunately.

Try a different web browser, e.g. Opera and Vivaldi. Both are extremely good and won't cost you anything.

(I have been having a variety of problems with Firefox lately, but no problems at all with Gumtree).

+1 for Opera, I've been having problems with some pages not opening with Firefox & Chrome due to DNS issues, fixed it with Opera.

If Opera won't open a page properly for you, then try using it's inbuilt free VPN to open the page, it may surprise you as it will get past any DNS issues. Once you turn on the VPN in settings it can be toggled on & off by clicking on it at the left side of the address bar.
    Cheers, Tiny
