drivers???
what does device manager say??
As the screen-grab will show, there is absolutely zilch in the drop-down list of sound schemes.
And the sole example of system sound I have is the Windows startup sound - other than which my laptop is totally devoid of system noises.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop running Win 7 64-bit.
Is there anybody out there who can point me at my problem, please ?

Each of the three says "This device is working properly".
Download and re-install the appropriate Windows 7 audio driver(s) for your particular model from the Dell website.
There are many models of the Dell Inspiron series series notebook computer so it is not possible for me to give the the exact URL, however
You will probably be asked to provided the 'Service Tag' number for your computer.
If you don't know what it is or how to find it use an internet SEARCH engine for clues.

Agreed, it could be a sound driver issue, but it's a bit odd if you get a startup sound.
I actually switch all my system sounds off.
Are you getting playback sound from audio and video files OK?
tristen, do you hold to your advice after reading my post replying to mtv ?
If you can live without the sounds, then I'd do nothing, just forget about it.
One question that comes to mind is, how long has the sound scheme been missing?
If you really want the sounds back then you could try some Windows repair work that won't lose any of your personal files or settings.
This will involve using the command prompt. If you never used it before it will look scary, however it isn't something to be afraid of.
As it's possibly a corrupt System file;
1:Try using the System File Checker. This scans your windows system files & compares them to what they should be, then repairs/replaces any corrupt System files.
This is a step by step how to with pictures,
2: If that doesn't work; In part 2 of that link "How to manually replace a corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file"; .
there is a way to replace the sound files if they are missing, now since you know that the sound scheme works on your PC with another User account, you have the files present somewhere (I don't have W7,however they should be located in C:\windows\media), you can locate those files & copy them to a USB, then paste them into the correct spot in your original user account using the steps provided, this is a lot more involved (scary) than method 1:, problem here is C:\windows\media should be the same no matter the user account
Apart from that you will likely have to reinstall W7, however I wouldn't go that far for a system sound scheme.
hope that helps.
Cheers, Tiny

Silly question perhaps, but you have tried clicking on the drop down box to select a sound scheme?
Can you check if the sounds appear in your windows media folder. c:\windows\media
Not running W7 any more but try installing one of Windoze theme packs. If you have other sounds working, then that indicates that drivers should be working ok.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

A bit confused: as the standard pack is still there, don't know what installing any more would achieve ...
I mean, there's some problem with linkage between the Media file's contents and where they're meant to be found, no ?

No, not those folders.... the individual sounds... below those folders... like these?
I'd be reinstalling drivers, Even if it says they are there.
