For me, it's Sony Vaio, Asus and HP. However, it also depends on what you're using it for. If you plan to use it for gaming, of course, knowing the specs is a must. For me, I use mine for watching videos a lot. So, I have an external HD like WD My Book 3.0. It is pretty fast at 5 gigabit per second for transfers. It has up to 2TB of storage.

That's so true but they only make HDs, media players.

i have owned 3 toshibas and one acer, compaq.

compaq hdd died my guess is due to bad heat management - it was a hitachi drive, bundled software was a bitch, much better now running a clean install.

toshiba 1 > whenever its moved around it locks up, unable to diagnose, still works as a desk laptop.

toshiba 2 > Hdd died, not sure why

Acer lost a stick of ram, and imo has the worst software.. never seen a lappy so slow out of the box.

if i were to buy a lappy, i would buy a clevo.. a mate got one and you were able to custom build it (somewhat) seemed pretty solid in the time i knew him.

if not i would buy ASUS as everything asus i have ever owned is beautiful.

thats awesome man. would have suggested a mac but feared getting flamed by pc fanboys.
    they both have their strengths.

which mac did you buy? the core2duo or the i5 or i7?

i'm actually looking at getting one at the moment as well.

I have used (in order from oldest to current)

Acer-Very slow, had overheating issues from the start.
Dell-Cheap, but lagged under (any) heavy use.
HP-Quite cheap, fairly slow, random system crashes, repeatedly failing DVD drive, dead pixels, but a good battery life.
Toshiba-A solid performer, but had HDD problems, causes unknown.
Mac-Very reliable, but poor battery life and low compatibility rate, and had 2 screen failures.
Toshiba-My current lappy, it gets used for a fair bit of gaming, audio editing, and DVD recording, never had an issue with it at all, apart from the very occasional graphics driver crashes which happened up until about a month ago, but now she's sweet as.

I have owned both the HP and the most recent Toshiba (Toshiba Satellite A500). The rest I have just tried for a couple weeks or so. So, don't take my word for it!

Apparently the graphics crashes on the Toshiba A500 are because Microsoft hadn't released Win 7 drivers for that particular card.

    HP=HEAP OF POO

They present well but thats about it.....They are loaded up with more crap software than you can poke a stick at and provide crap service and don't accept there design faults particularly the dv series I have seen heaps of these fall over just after the warranty period all with the same fault but they dont care.
