    Default iView Downloader

Can anyone suggest a free or paid solution to download (not stream capture) from ABC's iView that works well ?

    TIA

This is how I do it.

You download this script package and put it somewhere. Let's say c:\iview

Then get the HDS Link Detector plugin for your web browser

(there is also a Firefox version)

The HDS Link detector keeps a look out for videos and when it sees one it will create the command line code to download it, which you can copy and paste.

So now go to iview, go to the video you want, wait for the promos and ratings to end (or you'll end up downloading Richard Fiddler dancing around) and then copy the link.

Open up a command prompt, go to c:\iview , paste in the link and then it starts downloading.

I use iViewRipper v2.51, dated 10 Feb 2017, with no issues.
    Let me know if interested.

SBSRipper v1.22, dated 29 Dec 2015 worked well until 2wks ago.

I'd be very interested if you can still advise on this, Xplorer?

My version stopped working a few weeks ago, on both computers. Suspect it was a slightly earlier version than yours though - 2.4something perhaps. Tried uninstalling and re-installing, but no joy.

    Thanks for your time!

Any idea where to find the FF version?

I found the old version of HDS Link Detector here:

But it's not compatible with the current version of Firefox.

    You paste it after c:\iview

So open up a command prompt in windows. Type in "c:\iview " and then right click and paste in the link.

    So you have something like

    c:\iview php AdobeHDS.php --manifest "http://iviewmetered-vh.akamaihd.net/z/playback/_definst_/cla.........etc

    Then hit enter.

    Sparkling59, sorry for the delay.

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it, as ABC iVew Downloader v2.51 stopped working mid December.
SBS Downloader has also stopped too.

They both still download the titles with description and picture, but fail to download the content.

I haven't tried Pete123's method yet, so until someone works some magic, it looks to be the one to use for now.

    Hi Pete

I am a newbie, and this is my first message. Sorry if I do not follow all the rules. I try to download from iview.

I search for HDS link detector, it seems that it has became "The Steam Detector". I follow your instruction but I did not get "php ..."
when I type in php, I was told that 'no such program"

    I cannot proceed any further.

Could you give me the updated instructions? I may need a bit more details.
Do I need to install "php"

    Thank you very much

    regards

I think they've changed video formats, it's using mpeg-dash now and I think it was still using Flash before. So you don't need that plugin anymore.

I'm not sure what I do and don't have installed at this point so apologies if this doesn't work. If not you'll need to look at how to install youtube-dl

But if that's good to go you just need to grab the page for the episode you want to download.

So this is the Shops episode of Bluey

    Then you go

    Code:
    youtube-dl --no-part --restrict-files-names https://iview.abc.net.au/show/bluey/series/0/video/CH1702Q012S00
(--no-part stops it making lots of small files and --restrict-files-names keeps out weird characters)

No idea if anyone is still here .. I'm a refugee from another iview forum that has just shut down.

Youtube-dl works fine with iview (and no need to use any extra command options). There's also no need to use anything else to get a working url. For 99% of shows the url can be obtained from the iview website just using a web browser. Go to the show & episode you want, click the 'share" arrow, click on "copy link", open youtube-dl (latest version always best) in a dos window and paste the link. Rename the resulting mp4 as something meaningful and all done. The only shows for which this does not work are one off specials. For those there're some scripts on the VideoHelp site which produce a text file with all the current working links .. but they are slow.

Default Youtube-dl and iview's specials and movies

I worked out how to do the one off specials or movies. I'll use and as my examples.

The end of the url shows the identifier of the video. Every video should have identifier but it may not be immediately obvious. In the Dance Academy *episode* it is CH1102H011S00, however the *movie* doesn't have one. Therefore we need to find it.

In Firefox I went 'Save Page As' with two different iview webpages to compare them. When you have done it should create a html file and a folder labeled "...ABC iview_files". I then then searched in the episode's folder for the identifier. There are two files that contain the identifier - CH1102H011S00_57eb6fc7c7ba7_1280_002.jpg and CH1102H011S00_57eb6fc7c7ba7_1280.jpg.

Therefore to find the identifier for the movie we should look for the corresponding jpg files in its folder. There is only one that is long enough that could work. ZW1541A001S00_5c09ac87bbe88.jpg

I then followed the same url pattern as the episode (and also got the idea to do zero for the series from the Bluey example above)

    Code:
    https://iview.abc.net.au/show/title/series/n/video/identifier
    https://iview.abc.net.au/show/dance-academy-the-movie/series/0/video/ZW1541A001S00
I tested it by using the youtube-dl -F command and it didn't go back to the genetic video downloader and continued to the iview one successfully.

Thanks for that. Always nice to have a 2nd way of getting the links. I think I can streamline your process a bit. There's no need to actually save the page and hunt for the file. Just go to the iview page in any browser, right click on the screenshot and select "save image as" and you'll get something like "IV1731H001S00_598aa96ecff76_1280.jpg" in the "save as" popup, then just insert the part before the "_" into:
    iview.abc.net.au/show/<title>/series/0/video/<identifier>

For most things the series will be "0". Then toss it at youtube-dl.

The latest update to youtube-dl has added the ability to acquisition 1280x720 resolution versions of iview hosted shows. In checking a random selection I've found that some but not all shows are available in the higher resolution. For example, all episodes in the current season of Dr Who are available at 1280x720p, whilst they are also airing season 10, but at 1024x576p.

    Unhappy

Has anyone noticed that iview have dropped back their resolutions to 1024x576 after going up to 1280x720 for a while? I updated to the latest youtubedl, no difference. I'm guessing that like other streaming services like netflix they're throttling bandwidth with increased demand because so many people are stuck at home. Has anyone else noticed the dropped resolution?
