This man is about to launch himself in his homemade (steam-powered) rocket to prove the Earth is flat.
Seeking to prove that a conspiracy of astronauts fabricated the shape of the Earth, a California man intends to launch himself 1,800 feet high on Saturday in a rocket he built from scrap metal.
Assuming the 500-mph, mile-long flight through the Mojave Desert does not kill him, Mike Hughes told the Associated Press, his journey into the atmosflat will mark the first phase of his ambitious flat-Earth space program.
Hughes’s ultimate goal is a subsequent launch that puts him miles above the Earth, where the 61-year-old limousine driver hopes to photograph proof of the disc we all live on.
I think they got the height wrong... perhaps they meant 180,000 feet.
I suspect the only thing he'll discover to be flat will be his rocket... and himself... if he manages to even reach 1,800 feet.

Just think that if this peanut is correct, we can stop building Rocket ships to the Moon and Mars and just start walking.
I wonder what his theory is to explain how the orbiting and geostationary Satellites work?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Instead of going up he should dig down and see how far he can go.

He is a nut, but is he just trying to make himself rich being one ? You can see it apparently on PPV.

On Saturday aye?
Finally something to look forward to
Here his former test flight:
I really like his parachute:
Problem is, if he gets to 1,800 ft (I don't think that was a typo) he will be proven right: The earth still looks flat.

Why doesn't he just try jumping the Snake River Canyon....?
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Any takers on him becoming a Darwin Award nominee??

A man who believes Earth is flat, and was ready to launch himself from a rocket in California on Saturday afternoon to prove it, . At least for now.
Not having the required federal permits plus mechanical problems with his "motorhome/rocket launcher" forced self-taught rocket scientist "Mad" Mike Hughes to put his experiment on hold.
I guess we could say, his attempt has fallen 'flat' for now.
I'm disappointed too.... I was so looking forward to seeing this!

I wonder if this 'permit delay' was a case of COLD FEET as they have already launched it at least once according to that video.
Obviously the USA has different Laws in relation to Flight and Civil Aviation than we do but I had the impression from other shows relating to such flights, so long as you were located outside known or designated flight zones, you could fly.

Gotta love that parachute in the second video in Post 6...............
Wasn't much left of it, was there?
Old mate didn't look so good after his test flight. I was actually impressed by the amount of acceleration his ship had. If it could have sustained that rate for about ten minutes, he really would have been in space. Although he would have been unconscious to see his dopey theory disproved. That launch looked like it was pulling about 20-30g's. You can't stay conscious long under those conditions.
Cheers, Tiny

I guess it doesn't matter if the earth is a sphere, or a flat disc.... when you hit it hard and fast from a homebrew rocket..... you are still dead.
If he thought he could prove his 'flat earth theory' at an altitude of only 5000 feet.... why not just charter a plane, which can fly much higher?
Definitely a good Darwin Award nominee.

Takes the term "drop kick" to its logical conclusion.
The Earth isn't anywhere near as flat as he is
what an idiot.
had something similar a few months ago , I was at the local boat ramp about to launch for a day out to Great Keppel Island. This bloke was asking random boaties for a lift out to see the "edge of the earth" which he reckoned was about 10k east of GKI. what a twit. When he approached me i told him that ive been about 10k east of GKI and had not seen anything like the edge of the earth , so therefore the edge must be about 20k out ,and my boat didnt have enough fuel to go there. There must be some freakingly big retaining wall out there somewhere lol.
was in the news just now.He died.
