    Default Hardrive and Vista

    Hi all i built a new computer today for myself and went to put itn an old IDE 300gb hardrive.im running vista ultimate 64bit...now the hardrive shows up fine but it says i cant access the data and i need to format first...However i dont want to format i need my data.....What do i do?is there anyway to access the data on the hardrive in my vista operating system without formatting it?

    I have used Bart PE boot disc to access a disc doing the same thing

    in propreties of the harddrive, go to security and give your self permission to access data.

    Can you stick the drive in another machine(running XP) as a slave.
    When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

    Is the drive connected to a jmicron ide controller on the mobo (if it is a newer socket 775 Intel board) and is vista recognizing the controller ???

    i use to have this problem a lot when swapping hd,s in caddies,all i could do was recover the hd with some thing like
    R-Studio then format the drive and put the material back on the drive....i have given up on ide caddies!
