Default NBN Gurus - should I update modem or not.....

    here are my connection specs.....

You are 710 meters from the node and therefore your speed is excellent for that distance:

    Estimated DELT Distance 710 m
    Electrical Length 14.5 dB
    avcPerformanceDetails
Layer 2 Bitrate 61881 kbps down / 27342 kbps up
RTX Actual Net Data Rate 64471.0 kbps down / 28279.0 kbps up
RTX Actual Expected Throughput 63819.0 kbps down / 27994.0 kbps up
RTX Attainable Net Data Rate 64963.0 kbps down / 27843.0 kbps up
RTX Attainable Expected Throughput 64201.0 kbps down / 27516.0 kbps up

i am using my trusty old billion 8800 non approved for the nbn modem with broadcom chipset.
i've tweaked the snr and its rock solid at above specs..

I was going to upgrade to a Taipan dsl-4320l, but am worried my sync will be worse.....

This is the same modem I used on ADSL for a couple of years with excellent results....

Does anyone have experience with above modem @ 700+ m from the node ?

mate at 700mtrs that looks decent considering once it gets over
    400 it starts dropping quickly

Looking at your modem details your max attainable rate is about 63Mbps ..

Your speed test result is showing 56Mbps so you are very close to that.

Agree with all the above, given the distance I would be quite happy with that.

raining today so i had a play....

theres a rats nest of wiring here, lots of old connections for a previous large office.
I isolated the incoming and line to my modem in office.

    disconnected everything else and:

    B0 Traffic Type PTM
    B0 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps) 31117
    B0 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps) 76121
    B1 Traffic Type Inactive
    B1 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps) 0
B1 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps)

    Line Coding (Trellis) On On
    SNR Margin (dB) 6.8 6.3
    Attenuation (dB) 20.1 0.0
    Output Power (dBm) 13.5 7.8
    Attainable Rate (Kbps) 77172 30545
    Rate (Kbps) 75938 30545

Not sure what else is on the same line so now i]m going to connect modem directly to incoming line....

    B0 Traffic Type PTM
    B0 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps) 35154
    B0 Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps) 88154
    B1 Traffic Type Inactive
    B1 Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps) 0

what a difference, looks like ill be getting the telco man in to run a new line and cat 6 cable.......

speedtest sunday arvo via wireless with wires twitched together.....

Worthwhile improvement for a little time spent.

yes, 61mbps sync to 88mbps, just by bypassing all the installed lines....

after testing with the asus modem connected directly to the incoming line , i'll be keeping it.
even though it syncs a few percent lower, the throughput is higher, possibly because of the later broadcom chipset and much faster processor.
it does take a couple of minutes for initial sync, the billion around 30 seconds....
it's also fully vdsl compliant up to gfast/35b, in the event nbn upgrades in the future.....

its been solid for over a day with no dropouts/slowdowns at all..

    couple of lessons here,

1] connect your modem directly to the incoming line, even if you have nothing else plugged in to other outlets. vdsl is much more sensitive than adsl in this regard.

2] if you have a good to excellent sync on vdsl, get a modem with latest broadcom chip. if your sync is below 70mbps, try and use a billion etc with older broadcom chip....

I have no experience with FTTN, but I know with ADSL, I was able to significantly improve performance by:

    a) Disconnecting all other phone outlets 9as you have done)
    b) Discovering the make of the chipset used at the telco end of the link and buying a modem that used the same chipset.

I will once I connect it permanently. I need to run a cat 6 cable from the line input point to the office and plug into the switch.

I take it your provider doesn't have a presence in your state given the high pings ? Or its just speed tests to Sydney ?

What sort of pings do you get on a speedtest in your home state ?

If Beagle are sending you to Sydney before you get to your destination its not great.

Take a look here about POI (Point Of Interconnect)

Many smaller providers dont have POI's over west or far north.

Aussie Broadband have a good checker here

Although I connect through Mount Eliza I noticed the other day that I was connected through Horsham, presumably I was rerouted due to a problem.
My ping times are usually 8 seconds though some times even lower. My son who is back home for a short period thinks its great (I hope it doesnt keep him here )

the closest poi to kalgoorlie is katanning, 600km away.........
all of the wa ones are in perth area, except for one in geraldton...

    list of isp's servicing katanning...

    • Belong
    • Dodo - 13 DODO
    • Mate Communicate
    • Spintel
    • Tangerine Telecom
    • Tellnet
    • TPG

    not a very inspiring list.....

probably better off staying with beagle telecom until kalgoorlie gets its own poi.....

at least it is a solid connection, im not a gamer so ping time isnt critical...

Belong is ok, (they are owned by Telstra and use their network) but they refuse to offer anything but 25/5 on FTTN/FTTP which is absolutely pointless.

I am a bit surprised to hear Kalgoorlie doesn't have one, but providers are now starting to branch out more so things will likely change.

yes, since there is an nbn satellite uplink station just out of town, you would expect there would be a poi here......

Back when I was with Aussiebroadband using the Ipstar satellite, they said they had their 'Uplink' at Kalgoolie, same or separate facility?
I think another one was at Mooree in NSW.
They tried to tell me they had a link at either Cairns or Townsville in FNQ.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
