    Question antenna question

    Hi all,

    Dumb question from me time.

I have a single antenna outlet in my bedroom and that is where I have my telly plugged in.

I would like to run another telly in the kitchen.

Do I need a splitter amplifier with multiple antenna outlets, or, is there a divider that I can plug into the existing wall outlet.

The walls are cinder block and I live on the ground floor in a block of units so I cannot drill holes or anything structural. (Even if I was still Capable).

Maybe this belongs in TV, but I think it's really a general question.

As usual there are 50 answers to your question.
    Yes,Yes are the first 2.
If you did use a splitter, remember you will need to run a length of Co-ax from it to the TV.
Will this pose any problems placing it where it wont be a danger to tripping over it?

Another option to consider is using an Indoor/outdoor antenna.
By Indoor/outdoor I am thinking of one sold by Aldi recently as from what you have said previously about where you live, you would NOT put anything outside.
How close are you to the TV transmitter?
Where you want to put the TV, is it on the TV transmitter side or is there a window where it could sit facing the Transmitter?

I have no idea if those flat antenna's like Aldi has sold work so this only a suggestion for you to consider.

If you live in a block of units then chances are there will already be an amplified splitter in the building to supply all the units.

So a simple and cable along the skirting board should do the job.

    Ta muchly for this info.

Now all I have to do is get a roll of gaffer tape and coax long enough to stick along the walls between rooms. No skirting board here just painted concrete.

Can you suggest someone who can supply and deliver all the bits I need ? If they want to sell me another telly that would be nice as well. (I'm housebound)

    Cheers

Yes, this thread does belong in the TV section... as it's specifically about TV.

PZ. is likely correct in assuming your building probably has a master antenna system with amplified signal distribution.

Most of these systems work OK, others not so much, so without knowing exactly what signal level and quality you have at your outlet, we presume they are OK and that you have reliable reception, suitable to insert a 2-way splitter.

Basically, it divides the signal in half to each of the two outlets.

There will be some additional loss of signal in a long cable run, but I'm guessing the distance to where you need the second outlet in the kitchen isn't a huge distance, so once again, if you have good, reliable reception now, it should theoretically be fine.

You should use RG6 Quadshield cable and F connectors, together with an F type 2-way splitter.

You'll need F to PAL adaptors or crimp-on PAL plugs as well to fit the TV antenna sockets and probably the existing antenna wall outlet as well.... assuming it's the PAL type, which most terrestrial antenna outlets are.

You can buy pre-made long PAL extension cables with moulded connectors, but more often than not, they are very lossy poor quality cable, so you need to ensure it's RG6 Quadshield cable.

Are you planning on mounting the new TV outlet on the kitchen wall, or just plugging the cable directly into the TV? (wall surface-mounting will require additional parts).

If you don't have coax stripping and crimp/compression tools to fit the connectors, you'll need someone to make up the cables, or buy pre-terminated cables, but beware of those crappy ones I mentioned above.

Obviously, having someone custom-make the length of cable you require would be ideal.

Several stores will probably be able to deliver what you need and some may make the cables for you if you tell them the length and connector types, etc.

    Where are you located?

Before using the 'Gaffer/Duct/Go-Fast' tape, you will need to really clean the surfaces where you want to run the co-ax other wise in time, it will just lift.
Also depending on the length of co-ax being used, if you can, lay it out as straight as possible overnight or longer as it will try to coil back up.

Gaffer will likely lift paint when it's removed, if it's left on for a while.

My Daughter has just moved from Kariong after 10 years which is barely 5~8
kms from the Gosford translator and I was surprised when she moved there, how poor the TV signal was.
During that time she lived in 3 different places in Kariong, the last one more than 7 years and each house had an installed antenna system using a Phased arrays or a Yagi type and the reception was not the greatest as I would have expected.
Many of the homes there have MHA's on their antennas which surprised me considering their proximity to the Translator.

    Hi Gordon,

I am at the bottom of Kariong hill Near the Sewage works and tip, Woy Woy's premiere paradise.

The reception I get is reasonable but I have no way of comparing to anything good.

    Thanks for your input.

I havent been in that area for 2 years and now she's moved to Buladelah, its very unlikely I ever will.
As for reception, with Digital its either GOOD or static, unlike analog there is no in between.

If I was you I would prepare the fatted calf (cup of tea and a biscuit) and accept Resches offer.
