    Default Another PC startup problem

The computer I use for cad work has a startup problem.
On power up, it runs for about 10 secs then shuts off.
Power up again and it will fully load.
It's been doing this for months. Always have to press the go button twice before I can use it.

It boots until about a second after the blue win 10 window logo appears then shuts down.

A cheap test, albeit a pretty severe (time wise) on would be to perform a re-format and re-load. That should eliminate software as an issue. Depends upon how long you can afford to be without your computer. A complete system reload ujsuall takes me a couple of hours from go to re-installing the last piece of software. (That said: all my software isos and documents reside on external drives so I do not need to find disks or backups.)
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Thanks but Time is not a problem. Reloading all of the programs is.
    Def not going that way.

Did it just start doing it one day out of the blue?

Could try cloning to a different hard drive (SSD would be best, to eliminate spindle problems) and try booting it there in case you have a spindle head going out.

    what windows is it?
does it blue screen or just switch off
if it just switch off, id say you have a motherboard fault

there is a hard drive driver problem going around, but it results in a bsod

you could check this anyway, it wont hurt

Try clearing out the BIOS with the jumper and test the BIOS battery(>3V) and replace if it has one.

You mentioned Windows 10. One of M$ forced infamous updates may have stuffed things up for you. Anyway to revert back or a restore?
Videos drivers shouldn't cause this when it was working fine before.

Did you do the test with a different PSU?
Otherwise I am with Philquad with the motherboard on it's way out.

Did it just start doing it one day out of the blue? ...... Yes prob 12 months ago. It was my office computer but wanted to use it for cad only so 6 months ago swapped with another one into the office. As cad it prob gets used about 5 days a month.

Does it blue screen or just switch off ? ...... Just switch off.

Try clearing out the BIOS with the jumper and test the BIOS battery(>3V) and replace if it has one. .... Battery replaced when I swapped computers around 6 months ago. Should be still good since they last many years. Date and time is still ok.

Anyway ... So it goes like this.....
Thought I would check for new video drivers as suggested before pulling it apart to check hardware. Well NVidea is now on the bandwagon wanting a sign in and password. Sick to death of needing passwords for everything.
Then windows decided it was going to update itself. That took hours and hours til late at night, so in the mean time I looked up about windows startup recovery so I could check that after the update.
Turned it on this morning and lucky me, windows updating AGAIN. That was another 6 hours.
So when it finally finished, I shut it down then did a cold restart. Say what??? it's fixed itself.
Did several cold starts and now it's starting up like it should. dunno what happened there but all good now. Maybe it updated video drivers during the windows update and that was the problem. I'll check for drivers later.

One thing I noticed through this escapade, from a cold start the blue HP startup screen looks normal but doesn't have any options displayed such as ESC=boot menu ... F10-setup ... F11=system recovery. They do appear after a restart. Weird ! ... It still does this but at least it fully boots from cold now.

Just checked Nvidia drivers and it says I have the latest so it's hard to say if it was a windows problem or video problem.

i got in the shit the last time i said "you took the words right out of my mouth"
but just now, you mention the magic letters, being, hp
the motherboard was doomed before it was born
i could be wrong, but you can change the psu, case, hdd, dvd, ram, did i miss any parts? oh the dreaded hp generic pos hp mb
oh, cpu, id say its ok
forget software, it tends to throw blue screens
what chip is the cpu & ram? intel 1150 or 1151, get a new board, provided it will fit in the hp box (not likely)

Not blue screens. This one I was referring to : It should look something like the second image without the stripes (someone else's google image)
Chip is Dual core Intel Smithfield LGA775 2.8Gig B0 stepping. Ram 4Gig but running 32bit.

No mate, that second image is not my image. I got it off google.
Startup was the only problem and the computer is now running fine. After those lengthy windows updates it's fixed itself.

Yeah del works. Had to use it during testing.
Thanks for the offer but it's ok, I've got plenty of spare computers at the moment.

Well here we go again. A different problem.
Haven't turned it on since March and now It gives an error on boot and before windows kicks in : (error:system fan has failed! service pc to prevent damage to the system. press<f2>to continue.)
After pressing F2 the computer runs perfectly.
Power supply, case and CPU fans are all running fine. Bios shows 0 rpm. Nothing in the bios to stop monitoring.

So I replaced the case fan and checked connections.
Removed the motherboard and gave it a good clean.
    Updated Win10 to the latest.
Removed CPU and cleaned it and new thermo paste.
    It still gives the error.
