Netoworking Friken Vista and Xp

Hi there ih ave vista ultimate 64bit and xp 32bit and for the last day i have been trying to network them and i just cant get it to work at all.i have read every thing on the internet and nothing works at all im going crazyyyyy i have a ethernet cable connected from the ethernet port on the vista machine to the one on the xp machine and disabled every bit of security and yet nothing works i cant see the xp machine on my vista computer.....What do i do??

That cable is a crossover one - yes ?

As jimbo says, most important. Also must be on the same workgroup.
Can they ping each other?
