What a joke!! Australia has only two or three HD channels ...
If Australia is a democracy why, then, is voting compulsory?
"What has changed between the arrival of the First Fleet and today?"
"Wearing leg irons is now not required."
it doesnt actually say they will be trialling 4k hd, just dvb-t2......
I'd almost forgotten we had free to air stations.
There are more than that. Each of the three FTA TV networks (the 7, 9 and 10’s) all have at least one HD channel, some have two. Then the ABC and SBS each have at least one HD channel.
I don’t think the issue is that they don’t want to broadcast in HD, but more so they are restricted due to bandwidth and end user technology.

I feel part of the mess we have now was due to bad planning and costs to the public to convert not only to Digital but HD as well.
When Digital was being released, a Digital TV set was damned expensive and a set top box with SD ONLY was over $300, you didnt ask how much a HD capable one was worth.
Then we had 'FREEVIEW' being touted and erroneous claims that any appliance not marked as being approved by 'FREEVIEW', you might miss on broadcast material. I now believe those that were 'Freeview' approved had a tuner capable of SD, HD AND M-Peg4 which was to be possibly introduced at a later time.
Then there was that information about 'Narrow Casting' which confused a lot of people (I still have no clear idea of what it is about)
I like many started of buying an SD TV simply because of the cost difference between SD and HD and I didnt see the value as HD and SD with some programming looks the same to me.
There was near near double to triple the price difference between an SD TV and a HD one.
Even now I would be very hard pressed to pay in excess of $2000 for 3D or 4K just to watch Eddy MacGuire (Millionaire) or TEN's 5pm News.....
I got caught when they did introduce M-Peg-4 as I had no idea what it was and only one the TV's I had can receive it so I had to add a STB to those that cant, their too new to chuck out !!!.
Also there was a lot of comments made with the introduction of Digital that the Broadcasters were going to have different programs on the HD channel which would preclude those who only had a SD TV or STB would miss out and for that reason, both SD and HD show the same programming.
Promoting 'FREEVIEW' dint help here either with this.
Firstly they should never have sold ANYTHING that was SD only and didnt include M-Peg4 as standard.
After the 3D debacle where people were misled into thinking it was being introduced, any testing of anything should be clearly explained to the public and making sure that none of our exploitative retailers see a way to rip people off again as they did with promoting 3D.

yes one way they may do it is by working out how to compress more information into the available bandwidth ? ..... but then they will also need to simulcast the old technology as well for many years .... somehow ....
And the available bandwidth is now already nearly used up ..... have to wait and see I guess ...
I wonder if they have thought about a 4K internet delivery ....?

Just in time for 8K Televisions
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
Beginning in April 2018,
These will be available on VHF Channel 10 from Gore Hill and UHF Channel 29 from Kings Cross, Manly / Mosman.
LCN 401 will be used and the ID masked so that auto tuning will ignore the stream.
Most modern receivers and STBs should be able to manually tune and decode DVB-T2 broadcasts.
Looking forward to seeing whether the quest is for better quality, or the opportunity to cram more mindless banality into the terrestrial airways.
Sadly, I do believe that broadcast TV is moribund and no amount of tinkering will bring back audiences to linear TV. Most people under thirty years of age have no interest at all in FTA TV.

TV to the 'Younger Generation' today is what 'Musac/Elevator Music' was to their parents.............
2 Bob to a Peanut TYguy, QUALITY will be the reason for the testing as the thought of flogging 'Mindless Banalities' to the viewing audience would be far from their minds........

(Talk about a no relation comment)

I've merged the two threads that were running on this subject, here.
With the amount of reality rubbish on TV, not to mention the encores for an encore, also the 3-4hr repeats on weekends of what occurred during the week, I think 7, 9 & 10 can at least free up a channel each.
As to 4k delivery via the internet; that's only for those lucky enough to have NBN speeds. Sadly, I'm in an area not even planned.
3D TV, I think they were off with the fairies trying to off-load that hocus pocus BS.
I don't care about the quantity, I'd much prefer quality. So if DVB-T2 is the next fad that may allow a 4K channel for each bouquet, as long as they show sport..... and not Bewitched or Macguiver..., then bring it on.

Definitely not.
The main focus is maximising the 7 MHz bandwidth for more program stuffing.
Survey vans will be taking measurements across the Sydney basin to map coverage.
One can only hope that the "grey beards" that sit on these tedious committees can overcome the inertia that has plagued broadcasting in this country.

So far only carriers with no vision or sound. Able to tune to with compliant 2018 receivers on LCN 401.
ERP currently at 25 kW and rises to 50 kW tomorrow morning. Just waiting for complaints as the UHF translators also go live.

It would be interesting to know how well or bad it covers the Sydney license area as a whole?
Sydney is rife with Humps and Hollows which must cause reception problems for FTA, those with Cable shouldnt have any difficulties but that doesnt cover everywhere.
