Default Not happy with FAST 5355 NBN modem from Telstra. Any better modem alternatives?

    Hi Guys

Our area has finally been connected to the NBN. Our household will be receiving FTTN NBN internet. A telstra representative came over yesterday and gave me a FAST 5355 NBN modem to connect to FTTN. The NBN FTTN will be available on April 6.
Although I am using it successfully with my browsing on a desktop and a laptop, my ipad is not responding properly like imessaging and signing into icloud.
The wireless signal from the FAST 5355 NBN modem is going through the Netgear EX6200 range extender.
I never had this problem with the ipad when running a Netgear D6300 with the Netgear EX6200.
I have also have a Netgear R6300 wireless router and I am thinking of connecting it to the FAST 5355 NBN modem. So I will use the FAST 5355 NBN modem to get the internet and turn off its wireless function, and then use the Netgear R6300 wireless router for its wireless function and for port forwarding if this is possible.
Are there better modems than the telstra provided FAST 5355 NBN modem that I can use for internet? The only possible hurdle is that I have a landline line, and the phone base station has to be connected to the modem for the FTTN setup. Are there any other VDSL modems which allow for a landline phone to be connected to it?
Any opinions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

there are quite a few around and as is the case with everything
quality comes with price . I am using a asus setup and very happy
    with it.

I recommend heading over to whirlpool where there are numerous threads
in relation to what you are asking and there is a thread with a list
of working modems with all the pros and cons.

I pushed them to the Gateway Max 2 (Technicolor TG800vac) for free instead of the Sagemcom crap they originally sent as well as permanent Premium Speed Boost for nothing, even though I can’t get near it, you just don’t know what new tech is around the corner.
If your not going to Bridge the Sagemcom because you want to use your landline then you will have to turn of your wireless router’s DHCP server and use the DHCP server on the Sagemcom.
I currently use the Gateway Max 2 with wireless handled by a Linksys EA9500, It’s a compromise, but the Linksys gives me a full wifi signal anywhere in my house just not the control I want, Gateway Max 2 doesn’t come near that.

I tried my Asus DSL-AC68U (use latest firmware) and hung the Gateway off that, could ring out, but couldn’t ring in, even after
Opening the recommended ports, haven’t given up hope yet.

Also tried bridging the Sagemcom then connected the Linksys with DHCP and then the gateway off that, still could only ring out but nothing in, still haven’t given up on that yet either. The Asus is a good modem, has a great interface, but I curse Telstra for their crap modems.

Thanks, I was hoping you had worked out how to get it going with the ASUS.

Just thought I would mention some findings with Telstra's new Smart Modem. It replaces the Gateway Frontier.

A mate got one last week when he moved and as his old modem worked fine, gave it to me. I am with Aussie Broadband, not Telstra.

I took it home and plugged it and was surprised to see the 4G fallback actually worked on a non Telstra account. Telstra sells these modem for a bit over $200, a huge price drop compared to the $300+ dollar Gateway Frontier.
With Telstra rolling them out now, many will end up on Ebay cheap.

I ended up bridging it to my Asus DSL-AC68U, but unfortunately that turns off the 4G backup. I will keep it that way, as I am not going to give up my huge wireless range on the ASUS (with big arse antennas) for 4G back up.

Out of interest, this modem has improved my download speed immensely. I have gone from 70 down to 80 down, with upload jumping from 35 to 37. The cheap Belong modem did the same, I put the speed differences down to the (recommended) Broadcom chip v's the Asus's Mediatek.

Al, bridging Telstra modems knocks out the ability to use phone through the ports as far as I know.

You could port your number to a VOIP provider and use an ATA to solve the problem, other than that I dont know of a solution.

yes, use a modem with broadcom chip AND connect directly to the incoming line, and disconnect any other lines going to extensions etc....

    the nodes use broadcom chips....
