From Firefox to Opera

I thought I had read a few weeks (months) back that I read somewhere/someone here had dropped Firefox as their internet browser and migrated to Opera!

I'm curious as to how you/they like it.

I had 3 Firefox updates in the month of march and each one slowed the Firefox browser down more and more till finally I had to remove it and installed Opera.

Way back when, (15 yrs ?) MS Internet Explorer was so hack/plagued it took forever to load. Practically EVERY MS update after that fixed some leak or hole in MS IE or fixed their pi$$ poor excuse for security, Windows Defender!

I starting trying out other browsers for something quicker. Firefox among others, including Opera, won out, even though Chrome was a little quicker(didn't trust their privacy issues or lack of), I migrated to Firefox.

Everything was fine till they released Quantum last November, and it has been going downhill from there until this last update which dealt the fatal blow.

Using Opera 52 and I'm happy as a pig in . . . . mud!

I'm looking for comments pro or con . . .

Yep that was me that migrated from FF to Opera & still happy with Opera.

I still have latest updated FF, but like you, find it so slow.

For me the fastest browser, also with the most user preferences(for security and privacy if you know what you are doing) is QupZilla.
However it can be a bit buggy on my Mac at least, occasionally might shut down but restore tabs usually works. I have often more than 30 tabs open so that might be the reason.

I gave up on Opera(due to lack of user settings, forced updates and not that fast either) and Firefox a while ago.
Vivaldi is the 'new Opera' that has more user settings.


I still use Firefox 52 Esr occasionally, but on speed QupZilla beats them all.
However since I replaced the mech HD with a second hand SSD for a few bucks in my old MacBook Pro, all browsers are much faster.


EDit: On Android, Opera Mini was always my browser of choice until they forced Google adware onto you. So instead of opening the page you want it opens a Google Shit-ad page that you have to close and then try again. They have lost me.

I'm in the same boat cmangle, and I will never use chrome for the reasons you mentioned

FF is rooted now, unusable IMHO, even after I worked out how to put tabs under the address bar, such a shame

Tried using opera as my main browser which has always been my back up to FF but not customizable enough for my tastes

Am using Basilisk ATM, (VERY similar to FF) but still slow when there is a video component to the page

You mentioned QupZilla had slight problems on your Mac, is there a MS windows version?

he is introducing a new animal called Falcon which is not ready yet for windows. Try Qupzilla if you like, you can switch to Falcon later.

FF seems to be working happily on this desktop but the el cheapo laptop with the minimal memory told me the other day 'Something' was slowing down the 'Browser'.
The lappy came with 'Edge' as the default Browser which I wasnt too keen on using for any particular reason, just preferred FF.
FF went whacky on the Laptop the other day, doing upgrades and then going away to 'have a thought about things' until I did a restart which seemed to settle it down.
I need to have the Laptop checked over I think.

Been using Opera since Version 3.
Had to use Firefox for a few months last year because the Bank blocked most Browsers during a Website update.
Worst experience ever.

i have been using opera also since version 3 vivaldi is by a breakaway group that were not happy when opera went to one based on google chrome and is still being developed and i think will be the browser of the future

Opera is not based on Google Chrome.
They both use the Open Source Chromium at their base code.
The user interface is created by each company.

I'm surprised that Chromium hasn't been mentioned until Resch's post, or if it has been I missed it. I actually use Chromium as my main browser on Linux. It is fast and has the advantage of being able to use Chrome's plugins. It is Chrome but without a lot of the Google bloat.

I have used Qupzilla and found it a fast and very usable browser. Last I looked it had a small number of extensions available but does not work with Firefox or Chrome extensions. If you don't want to use many extensions it is a very good choice. Last I checked Vivaldi was simply not ready for Prime Time. I've got Firefox installed and have particular uses for it, but I don'g use it enough to comment on its speed or otherwise.

Bought a new laptop with the dreaded Windows 10 and as default Chrome as a browser. My old Vista machine died of old age.

Very soon became sick of Chrome so installed Firefox which seems to run ok, I use DuckDuckgo as the browser and so far all seems well. There was quite a struggle to get Chrome to accept that I did not want it as my browser.

The annoying thing about FireFox though is just about every site I log onto get captions telling me "Logins are not secure. Logins entered here could be compromised".

The sites I use are pretty staid and upfront interest groups so its a real pain when these login captions come up. Sometimes even obscuring where the login has to be typed in.

Apart from that FireFox seems reasonably quick.

Your Windows 10 came with Chrome? Or did you replace "EDGE" with Chrome?

DuckDuckGO is not a browser, but a search engine!
