You are right, but that's not the whole story. It's the cracks in our parliamentary democracy which are showing. Most people just want to get on with their own lives without involving themselves in this bullshit. They have basically 2 choices, Labor or Liberal, both now as loony as each other, except for SA and Vic where the ALP has gone well beyond loony to the point where they have almost joined the Greens. The Feds under Shorten are headed that way to. Let's face it, to have a government as bad as Turnbull's within cooee in the polls they have to be. When presented with two bad choices, you vote for whoever you think will be the lesser of the two evils, as people did in the last Presidential election. Or waste your vote completely. Change is a long slow process, and people have to be pushed a long way before it comes about. In the meantime, most of the more sensible voters for either of the major parties are powerless to effect change. Most vote for one or the other. The Loonies, though small minorities, are well organised and hold the balance of power, so have an inordinate amount of influence on the policy of both major parties.

And let's face it, ordinary voters are pretty powerless. Things have to get so bad that enough ordinary people are angry enough to join parties, donate money etc. and basically get involved. That takes a lot, especially in Australia. So politics is left to the dregs. It's amazing we get any good politicians at all.

My Grandmother used to lose her shit any time that I said you could give somebody a penny for their thoughts and get threepence change.
