Despite all the Telstra advertising bullshit, 5G is currently only MARGINALLY quicker tha 4G. That is because ther is NO 5G standard as yet (only an interim spec). The standard is not due to be completed until late next year, and speed increases rely on spectrum in the 26GHz band which haven't even been allocated in Australia yet. The touted air latency target of 1-4 ms has not been demonstrated anywhere yet, with the best being 8-12 ms.

The carriers are mainly interested in it, because they can set their own rates independantly of any third party. However, ANY radio based transmission will NEVER be price or speed competitive with a fibre based network. e.g. A current "unlimited" Telstra service will cost at least double what you will pay for an NBN unlimited service, with an average speed of 2-50 Mbps compared to 80 Mbps average on FTTP. Also, the mobile unlimited is 40GB at maximum speed with the remainder throttled to 1.5 Mbps. If you think you will get high speed 5G for anywhere near current 4G prices you are dreaming. Also, the cost of terminal equipment for FTTN (ie your modem) is orders of magnitude cheaper than the equivalent mobile devices. It is MUCH simpler to increase fibre bandwidth than radio.

That is good and well to say if you have access to Fibre
Its not in my town, its no where near my friends properties..... They could go NBN WiFi, but 4G is cheaper and not location locked

As you have quoted it, what is NBN Unlimited worth?

I looked on the Telstra page it says $90 a month for Unlimited and something about 40Gb???
(couldn't read more and Telstra webpages crash my browser)

I have 3G Unlimited for the same price and i can take it anywhere in Australia and offshore, generally at 20 to 30Mbs.
Great in the car when driving, camping, holiday house, caravan, etc

Doesn't look like double the price to me (although its a different carrier)
Price of Radio equipment, are you talking about the Providers equipment?
    Have i missed something here?

    Telstra Fibre NBN

    Optus 4G

    Looks competitive to me
Speed might be better with Fibre NBN, but it doesn't sound like it according to some members here.
Price, well i'll let you decide

With fixed you also get 900% more downloads than the 3G option.

What he is saying is that I wouldn't last the time I spend on the loo with my mobile on 200GB/month compared the with amount of shit I download and stream with Fibre.
    A few puns intended
    Try 100GB A DAY!

SD stream 1Gb per hour, HD stream 3GB per hour, do you live where they have more than 24hours in a day?
100GB a day, 33.33Hours of HD content... amazing

The 3G plan you quoted offered 100GB for the month, while the fixed plan offered 1000GB - a 900% difference.

We may not be typical, and I don't have current usage figures, but our previous ADSL service with Dodo REGULARLY exceeded 300GB/mth. We are a household with 2 pensioners and an adult daughter who is a gamer. When we had the ADSL service, we also had Foxtel satellite, Since then we have dropped the satellite, and gone to Fetch and Kayo (both streaming services). Without an unlimited service, we would be up for considerably greater costs. Also, Fetch does not recommend or support a mobile connection.

200Gb month would do me and I use the net a LOT.

Spose it depends on how much porn you want to download or how much you want to pickle your brain with these endless shoot'emup games.
I watch a lot of YT and download the odd Movie but still would be fine with 200Gb. Wasn't all that long ago and we were making do with 20Gb and that was with a couple of teenage kids. We got 100gb and thought it was Christmas and wasn't using it all going flat out.

I would think the solution is plainly obvious. If you are Filling a load of HDDS a month with downloads or spend your life playing games, it's not for you.
If you have more reasonable net usage it could be an advantage over what some people have now.

I looked at the 200GB thing and am I to understand I can use this on my laptop/ tablet as well as on the Home computer all on the one account/ connection?
Obviously all would contribute to the total used which I don't care about but if I could share it like that, I'll sign up tomorrow.

    Use it on anything George
I have 12 devices connected at once
    No probs
Just via my phone connected to WiFi router
    Dual WiFi freqs
    And multiple hard wired
    At 2 different proporties

Been like it for years with Unlimited 3G 30Mbs.

I have monitored my usage, and I abuse the hell out of it and would come in around 80GB to 100GB a month.
    Generally less

The best thing is only having 1 bill for phone and internet, Australia wide.
The ability to use it in the car with Android head unit is also extremely rewarding...

I have to admit, I find it kind of annoying now when I go to a shopping centre or hotel and can't get ( free) Wifi.
The local shopping centre doesen't have it but the much smaller one down the road has an awesome connection. You can get it wherever you want to sit your arse and drink coffee. What I also find a bit odd is in the local place, very few of the shops or Cafes do either. I go up the goldy a lot and I can get wifi from 10 different places sitting in Cavill avenue but then I check into some upmarket hotel and some of them want to Nickle and dime me on wifi. Getting better but.... In the past I have walked into places and asked if wi fi is included. If they said no, I have asked if it can be arranged that it is or should I make other arrangements with my accommodation? They will give me free breakfasts, free bottles of booze, a free dinner and they want to stiff me on wifi?

Sure, I can hot spot it but I think it's just a basic service now that should be automatic especially in the hospitality industry. many places now go one further, they not only have wifi but also outlets where you can recharge. Many have USB sockets as well as 240V outlets.

I was at a shopping centre the other day at Miranda. They have wifi in the centre but where we stopped for lunch it was unuseable. I saw a free wifi from the apple store 2 Floors below. Signal was weak but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not much on crapple products but if they were as good as their wifi, I'd be lining up and and gushing all over them too!
I thought speed fell off with signal strength but that was the fastest wifi I had seen in a while and according to my tablet and the wifi signal app, it was at the bottom end of the reception scale.

One thing that also amuses me is how well Maccas has their wifi geo locked or whatever you call it. I was sitting outside one a few weeks ago while the mrs went in for coffee. I was the row back outside the door and the signal was sketchy at best. About 300M away down the road there was a Bunnings and I could get their wifi and log on no trouble and got far better sp0eed than I could with maccas 8 m away.
Not the first time I have seen this with maccas. Can be great inside but once you get past that verandah, Thanks for coming, game over.

I don't know how it's done but maccas sure knows how to cut you off once you hit the carpark!

quick story....Telstra were disappointed I cancelled. My partner is the primary account holder. I think we might be the last so they were threatening to cut our phone off by this Fri. We got 3 months NBN free through telstra with no contract. I'll shop around during this period as I think $99/month is a bit rich.

I got a letter from TGP on Monday advertising NBN services. According to them, the NBN should be here on 22 of Feb. That will be close as dammit, IF it's actually available then, to 3 years since they had a booth in the local shopping centre advertising " NBN is in the area NOW!" Call me a pessamist but this being about the 6Th "It's coming soon" BS Notification we have had, I'd put $10K on the fact it wont be available till at least may and I'd put a good amount on it being here latrer than that. They were woking in the street about 3 Months ago and a neighbour whom enquired was told a few weeks and it would be on so ......

I see they aren't even offering anything above 60 MBS. I had 100MBS and got well into the '90s with my cable connection 8 years ago. Still run in the street here but you are not allowed to connect to it now.
Have to use this Bullshit far slower NBN which costs more as well. So much for technological Progress and what's more, I wonder how much longer this NBN crap will prevent faster and better technologies being made available? It's already well out of date and holding back better, faster and far more reliable services.

Someone should have been strung up by the balls for this.

Ummm, This decade has weeks to run mate. I think your expectations are HIGHLY unlikely.

Next decade, being that we are just at the start..... Well, you -might- be lucky... but I wouldn't count on it. Most likely it will be superseded before it's available in a LOT of not so remote places.
