I run this through an install and restarted the computer.
The result is sound still doesn't work and still shows dummy controller.
Yet, driver manager has changed. Previously it only showed the intel microcode.

I'm assuming the audio was working in Mint at first?
or at least in the live boot version before it was formally installed
I checked the driver on my system and it's using the first one IE oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms

type pulseaudio in terminal - you'll see something like E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
    If it's working that is.

So it comes down to how to get your built-in audio recognised
    Did you install pavucontrol?

I just tried running the live version and got the same. dummy and not working.
Pulseaudio gave me exactly the same as you.

Maybe I should try your driver too.

Very odd - sound was working ok on that PC previously though?
Just thinking about one of the problem pages I read where it was built-in audio disabled in the bios.
Does your video card have HDMI output? should be a separate device detected if so

That's a good question. I tested a couple of other computers live (but too old) before I settled on this one.
On one of them I played some music just to look at the player but on this machine I never thought about sound until yesterday, after the install.
The onboard audio is enabled in the bios, and I know the sound worked with the previous linux (I think 13) installation.

I'm starting to wonder if linux has left me behind by not fully supporting 32 bit.

The acid test would be to try Lubuntu with a live boot just to single whether the problem is Mint and if audio is the only problem (could be hardware for some reason) you could get one of the '3D audio' USB dongles that abound on EBAY for less than $5 - I have a couple and they're surprisingly good and require no installation apart from just plugging them in. They provide stereo input (mic) and line output or headphones (low power of course).

Yes it sounds like a good idea, esp considering it should be a good sound test.
Well I had a look around and found another computer tucked away in my shelving. Didn't know it was there. It's a 64 bit with a higher end board so I will load the 64 bit version of Mint onto it and see how it goes. looks like it'll be a lot faster anyway.
Tomorrow I will try lubuntu on the first machine.

    Default lubuntu 32/64

i have been watching your progress and you have done well but the light version would have allowed you to check it all out first welldone good to see also noticed the audio problem this can be the 32/64 not loading correctly ie 64 on to 32 bit bd

Thanks but yeah it was 32bit mint on a 32bit computer so should have worked but I think the sound drivers were prob only 64bit. Who knows

after i have loaded lubuntu i have a couple of elvis on a stick and just stuff them in and they play automatically so no sound problems its easy to grab a apt from the software bin and try out a basic use for what you want to use the comp for then change to mint if you want makes the hair pulling nicer lol

On the 64 bit machine I'm just going through the steps on :

After entering "sudo apt-get update" I keep getting .... malformed entry 1 , list of sources could not be read

Did you get that ? and if so how did you get around it ?

PS Sokay I worked that out too.
    software resources eh ?
So I thought the line before "sudo apt-get update" was looking for a web address, which it is but I didn't realize it was saving to my computer.
At first I couldn't understand why it didn't work until it struck me there's a space before xenial (why do that you dickheads), which meant I had several incorrect entries as I tried different mods to the line.
Once I remembered there is a software resources in Mint, I removed them until I got the right one.
    Simple.....(nah it's bullshit)

PPS Now I've got Wine 3.0.1

PPPS After devel install I have Wine 3.11 .... Cool !

You're not alone with that problem - had a few goes at it myself thinking the space wasn't meant to be in it
But a simple copy and paste into terminal works just fine

I had other problems as well by not completely removing all vestiges of the previous version of Wine first which wouldn't be a problem if you hadn't installed the standard outdated version first. I actually messed things up twice causing all sorts of problems before getting it right.

Well this is where I'm up to : When trying to install Paint.net, I get the same error "windows 7 SP1 or newer is required"
    Think I need help again.

By the way have I mentioned the sound works on this one ?

sorry i dont use wine so cant help in that area i actually use two computers one on windoze and one on ubuntu 18.4 i have noticed that you have a tendancy to wander back to windows when you should be concentrating on linux so your thoughts are distorted as they are two different systems but please dont take this as an insult as its just an observation regards don

Uh oh ! now I seem to have another problem.
Wine has changed in the menu. Looks like I've lost some stuff.
Update and upgrade and computer restart, the menu stayed the same.

Wine is still there - just the nice shortcuts didn't make it to the menu (that's what happened with mine at least)
In terminal type winecfg and that should prompt the install of mono and gecko
