Some win programs sink their tendrils so deep into uncharted parts of windows making emulation very difficult or even impossible for current releases of wine. I have a program here that wasn't even happy in win7 although it was supposedly compatible and the only way I could get it working well was to install vmware in mint and load win 10 into it then install the troublesome prog into the vm win10 - worked a treat for me. One day I might get totally free of MS eventually.

Well it's been sitting looking exactly like this for the last 20 mins so I don't think it's going anywhere.
Is there a way to check if a program's running ? or what it's doing ?

what else do you have running ?
task manager (in system tools) will show what's actually active
did the download complete?
may have to allocate more resources to that area otherwise it may take all nite
Only things open are what you see in the pic : wine program loader (.net install) and the file viewer.
It's still sitting there looking exactly the same. Time to close it and try something else.
Looking at that winehq website again, I wonder if I should try the instructions from there (photo below- formatted for easier reading).
Think I would need help with that. What's wine staging ?

I was poking around winhq and it seems that nobody has got paint.net working in wine - maybe not enough have tried but it looks ominous to me
The big problem I'm finding is I can't get .net to install.
Keep getting all sorts of errors. eg try to install .net 3.5 and it says I must install .net3 and opens firefox to a download, I get it and it gives an error too.
Many programs use .net now so I know I will need it.
Might have to try following those directions.... What do they mean by open terminal in your home directory ?
Oh and another thing : There is .net1.1.4 , .net2.0.5 , .net 3.0 and .net 4.0.3 in a folder under wine, must have got there after installing wine I guess. Does that mean they're installed ? or are they sitting there waiting for me to install them ?

Trouble is I really don't understand the instructions for installation. I did fiddle with it but got no reaction.

Terminal always opens in your home folder by default
IE /home/your_user_name
and your wine should be found in /opt/wine-(stable or devel or staging)
Check in winetricks and you should be seeing .net versions up to 4.5 available there
The .net versions you see in the wine folder should be already installed unless they're leftovers from previous attempts

Just as an aside: I booted up win7 SP1 and installed paint.net (no problems) but it makes a huge footprint when you include all the dotnet installs it requires
Functionally it appears to be virtually the same as the Paint Shop Pro (version 6) I use but that one doesn't require any extras to install and I've been using it since 1999 (win 98SE days) so I'm fairly certain it doesn't need any dotnet support to function. The install exe is just 24MB and that's it - works on every windows I tried it on as well as wine, 32 & 64bit.
It edits, adjusts, crops, resizes, changes formats and resolutions, is multilayer and can make animated gifs etc etc
That wine-mono-4.7.2.msi file should just open with wine (MS installer)
It seem to run, for about 20 secs then the little timer thing disappears.
If I then try to install paint.net it says there's no mono.
sorry dont do windoze ? but incidental question what age is your mother b/d im begining to suspect the problems are piling up and this can be a suspect motherb/d just in case have a looky at the caps on it and see if there are any that have swollen tops ??

No the motherboard is fine. The problems I'm having are all software. It had win 7 on it before and worked perfectly.
I think it's about 7YO but still very capable. GA-G31M-ES2L.
perhaps have a look at caps around the ddr2 sockets these do funny things to the system and throw up silly results that can make you pull your hair out ? just a suggestion just cos it was working on win seven dont mean that is ok
