I get an unhandled exception in setupfrontend.exe (page fault on read access in 32 bit code) which crashes the install before it gets going - could be because I'm running a 64bit Mint but not sure.

Mine's 64bit too.
Try changing the version in winecfg to System. I have a feeling I did that.
These are the instructions I worked off : Just ignore the xp virtual drive part of it for now and try system instead.
1) Install Wine. (get it from your distro's s/w repository)
2) Install playon linux. (get it from your distro's s/w repository)
3) Run Playon Linux and create a 32-bit XP virtual drive.
4) Use Playon Linux to install “dotnet40” (DotNet 4.0) on that virtual drive.
5) Use Playon Linux to install “gdiplus” on that virtual drive.
6) Use Playon Linux to install PDN 3.5.11 (It's the latest PDN version I can get running) on that virtual drive.
That should create a PDN shortcut on your desktop that you can use to open PDN. You can also drag an image into the shortcut.

Same thing - tried about 4 variations of OS but no luck.
One difference I think is that you're using the 'development' version of wine which is 3.11 and I'm using the 'stable' version 3.01 which could be a factor
'System' is the only option I get in virtual drive creator

Wait......I forgot about something.
I also installed wine staging.
My version is Wine 3.11 (staging)
That's important for .net files.
I'll have to see if I can find where I got it from.

Here it is.
This is the page I use install wine staging and I used the Ubuntu method.
I also read that staging is actually a Microsoft thing that works closely with .net files.. so wine has incorporated it.

Installed staging 3.11 but the results are still the same

Oh gee well I dunno then.
Maybe I missed something else somewhere.
Think I might grab another old computer from the shed tomorrow and try again, not sure if I've got another 64 bit though but maybe that won't matter.
I'll sort this out yet !!
Just had some success - had to do a manual install from within PlayOnLinux and it's working

Working 100% now
But I still find Paint Shop Pro better for my purposes - horses for courses
I use it to cut, crop, rotate, resize, adjust colour, convert to different formats, add arrows circles and text to point out specific things of interest, create animated GIFs frame by frame etc etc
Is there anything majorly different you use paint.net for?

Was going to post a screen capture to show how alike the 2 progs are but can't work out how to insert a pic from my HDD on here (deja vu all over again)
loopyloo (01-07-18)
yah great work !!!!

What's the trick to posting a pic here?
Can it be done directly or does it need to be saved on an external server first (like photobucket or whatever)? I've done it before but there doesn't appear to be a button here for it now

Yes changed to staging but I suspect it would have worked in stable if I did the install within playonlinux
PSP - the original is about 20 years old and came from a company called JASC that was swallowed up by Corel. It must be almost abandonware by now (the JASC version) as Corel redid it to their own versions with the same name that turned into behemoths.

Ah yes I remember that version. It's so old isn't it.
I found another 64 bit computer hiding away. This one's a business class so runs fairly fast.
I've already loaded Mint onto it and as I load the other stuff I'll record each upgrade and what happens.
Suspicions are that it's not just what I put on it that matters but also the order, as I just found out. First thing after Mint, I used "apps" to get wine, then (through the menu) went to Configure wine and that triggered it to automatically installed Mono and then Gecko. Hmmm interesting.
