Here we go again! I wonder if the transponders will change.
why not do it for all and get rid of vast have the lot fta
Optus and Irdeto make millions from the taxpayer and also collect hundreds of thousands in accreditation and service fees from Set top box and Cam's suppliers. With the latest amendment to broadcasting act, encryption become irrelevant and hence ch9, abc and sbs are FTA on other satellites outside the Vast platform.
when one considers the rest of the world and the advantage of the tourist dollar from free adverts to other countries why not broadcast to the world stupid idea in the first place ???
Hopefully they have the brains this time to put it FTA , and 24x7 live streamed like it should of been done 2 or 3 years ago.
If this happens you can kiss goodbye to AFL for x-pats or holiday makers in Asia, Pacific they carry many more games than FTA channels do. I doubt if the AFL would allow people streaming without geo-fencing + the temptation for clubs and pubs to install c-band dish if it's FTA I know that technically it would still be illegal in a venue, but much harder to police.Hopefully they have the brains this time to put it FTA , and 24x7 live streamed like it should of been done 2 or 3 years ago.
FreeSat V7 Combo, Amiko A5 combo, UltraPlus X-1000HD+, Mediastar HD8200s
2.4m motorised mesh, 1.2m on D2, 1.2m on D1, 95cm on IS19
And then in the face of encryption, is the overwhelming success of FTA and Streaming channel Racing.com.
Shows it can be done differently.
Let the people watch it, then your market is 100 times bigger.
It's a stupid losing battle locking up content on paid services
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
Aus Plus is encrypted with PowerVu or BISS which has been broken for years, it's basically FTA at this point.
I doubt VAST will ever go FTA, there's licensing issues with having multiple states viewable due to advertisements and fair rights doesn't matter for SBS and ABC though so they should be FTA, SBS. Also $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
ABC and Ch9 fronthauls are not for public consumption that's why they're FTA, they're probably to cheap to pay for encryption for each of their downlink stations. Same thing happens in USA, FOX is the only one that encrypts their fronthauls.
While SBS, ABC and Ch9 are tricky to get via Optus D1 and Intelsat 19, if you don't want to pay for VAST you can always just get ABC off Optus C1 since it's FTA there.

Actually Australia Plus uses Irdeto still
aust plus only uses irdeto on Intel 20, used to be PV until too many code cracking stbs
fta on Intel 18 and recently found a biss home on Intel 19
There are only 2 offical AustPlus service running on 68e encrypted and 180e FTA, All the other Aust Plus services you see are rebroadcasted by other service providers and nothing to do with the offical service.
I can not see much change with the content other then a simple name change. In 2014 the Aust govt pledged to cut the funding for austplus and make it a temporary service running only 15 hours a day. After some creative accounting the existing format was obtained 24/7
The AFL at the time specifically made a complaint to the ABC board requesting more exposure rather then cutbacks not just for expats but the general Asian market.
You will find that much of the AFL content you see in the small bars are now getting streamed rather then using a large dish. I noticed this on my last visit to Bali.
VAST is a different case re encryption, the main reason is to protect the commercial networks advertising areas, and create blackspots so no other competertor encroaches on the oppositions area.
Secondly copyright agreements are catered for differently from region to region.
An laws vary from state to state so for example you may not be able to name a criminal in one state but you can in another and it has occurred court cases have been thrown out because a person was named on ABC or WIN in another state and someone saw it in VAST.
Services on D1 or Int19 are specific for one client and can be FTA or encrypted.

True its a success but their revenue model is more viewers more wagering, Racing Victoria which have the content rights for Racing.com received $351.38 million from a total turnover of $6.23 billion on Victorian race meetings with only $14 million more from channel 7. Not sure the Fun Police would approve of more wagering on sports they're already pushing for tighter restrictions on gambling. And then in the face of encryption, is the overwhelming success of FTA and Streaming channel Racing.com.

While I can understand why VAST was encrypted in the first place, but its been my belief that few if any in a Terrestrial TV area would spend from $200 to a $1000 to see what they can see from the local transmitter for about $50 for an outdoor antenna.
Also what advertising is on VAST has in my experience been either from 'National' outlets orplaces so far away to be of little interest except the offer of '5 cents off a tub of Margerine at the IGA Alice Springs' had me sorely tempted.......
VAST at least had a best idea of dividing the Country into 2/3 Time zones
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
on d1 the nz is divided into zones but most seem to prefer to have a dish rather than an tv antenna stuck on their house and terrestial is a bit of a no show when a stb is so cheap over there and most dont care what ads are on local or not
New logo abc australia instead of australia +
All else the same
Theyve used up australia network, australia + & abc australia so what will they call their next rebrand?
the thing is any one can get a cheap stb and stick up a dish and be away with all fta on d1 in nz but here in aus you gotta be out side commercial interests to get it by vast
?????????????? stupid idiots that allowed that to happen
Copyright and $$$'s are the reason VAST was set up as it is.
While you as a viewer couldnt care less regarding advertising, those holding the broadcast rights for an area most certainly do.
I feel safe in saying if you had a franchise for which you have paid mega bucks and expect to make mega bucks from, would be somewhat miffed if someone else could broadcast into your area and sell advertising time cheaper than you do.
On a slightly different level, several years ago a company began broadcasting fairly heavy grade pornography into Australia.
I am not sure where the company was located but the UP link was in Israel from memory and it was broadcast out on NSS9 located over the Indian Ocean and only had a minimal footprint to the East Coast of Australia.
Due to the very XXX rated content, you had to arrange to pay the subscription to a company overseas.
It only lasted a few weeks before transmission ceased, not from a lack of support I believe but I think from Governmental levels here to the Broadcasting authorities in that Country to close it down.
I could be crass and suggest it was closed down not just because of the program content but because 'They' here could not profit from it?
'I cant so you cant' sort of attitude..........
