One report said the Police responded 'in 20 seconds' to the emergency call.

Later another said the New York Times offices were being protected.

They say he purchased the gun (shotgun) legally and there in lies the problem that there is no way you can stop someone using it as he did.
This is the same as that recent Murder/Suicide in Western Australia where the guns used were legally obtained for legitimate purposes but one member decided to use them otherwise.
While I am still Anti Gun, I would not support any legislation banning ownership of firearms bought for legitimate reasons.
