    Default VPN for media streaming

Ok thought i would throw this one out to see what VPN people recommend
to use with a media streaming android unit.

I am only just starting to play with a MXQ pro unit
and its the first time i have really played with such a device and kodi.

So in saying that i am a little paranoid so want to use a vpn.

    cheers

Have a look at TorGuard, I've been using them for over a year without any problems but only with Windows.
They also have an Android app.

    NordVPN are excellent.

I have used them for several years as stated in an older thread.

They have apps for all popular operating systems.

I use getflix, have done so for a couple of years. I think I've had two outages of a day or less on the bbc but everything else has always worked and I'm happy.

I used to use Nord but found painfully slow servers and too many disconnections.

I'd have to agree with the others on Nord, I find it pretty fast and I dont think I have had a disconnection (using it now actually) but like anything results can vary with different people for different reasons.
I cant remember who I was with before them, but the service went to slow as hell for me so I left.

Given that they dont keep logs, there isnt anything to spill to anyone.

I used Nord for a while but started having too many dramas.
Running vypr now and getting 7 to 8 Mbps via torrent.

some of it comes down to where you are and what severs you are using and a heap of other stuff

But if you have a crap connection with an ISP that is overloaded then it will only get worse. I had iinet and dumped them for aussie and things have been good

been using getflix, purevpn, and nordvpn at the moment and nord seems to go ok at the moment, so will see how they pan out. no logs is an advantage.

I think it was on this site a list of most VPN's with the pro and the cons of each one. Now that was 2017 and it would be good to get the latest info if available.

thanks everyone , am going through checking the pros and cons of each
but main needs would be no logs and speed beause i have tested a few in the past
and made the net near useless to use it was so slow.

i know my connection is sweet getting near 90Mb but i want the streaming to
    be smooth and not stuttering.

    cheers

This is the latest version of the Torrent Freak annual VPN article:

More comprehensive but harder to use information can be found on this site:

There are a couple of sites that have been subject to bad publicity for handing information over. The most recent I have come across is IPVanish:

As is often pointed out, there is little guarantee that VPN's with a no logging policy actually don't keep logs. The only one I have heard of that has been tested is PIA (Private Internet Access).

PIA is located in the US, a so-called "5 eyes" country Australia is also part of this particular group. Some consider that any VPN's located in these countries are suspect. Some have the same concern in relation to "6 eyes", "9 eyes" and "14 eyes" countries. In relation to the US the main concern relates to National Security legislation whereby a targeted VPN would be gagged from disclosing if it had received, say, a National Security Letter. Some VPN's have so-called "warrant canary" arrangements which may or may not be effective. PIA does not have a warrant canary and has not denied having received a National Security Letter leading some of the more paranoid to speculate that they are already subject to such a letter. Probably a little extreme, but then again paranoia itself does not exclude the possibility that it is justified. Ironically the US is a far better jurisdiction than Australia for these purposes in at least some ways, as they don't have our draconian metadata retention legislation.

I've used PIA for a while and have found them to be fast and reliable. However, their servers are blocked from streaming US Netflix. I have also recently tried Nord, and find them also to be fast and reliable. They will allow the streaming of US Netflix and other services, but only on particular servers which may change from time to time.

For US and UK Netflix I tend to use either smartdnsproxy (getflix associate) or an Australian service, Vanished VPN. Vanished is a very innovative operation, and are now concentrating on various solutions for unblocking Sports telecasts. They are always very responsive and seem to solve any problems very quickly. They apparently have a very robust (and undisclosed) solution to Netflix's blocking attempts which works even when most others do not. They also have a VPN solution tailored for Peer to Peer, though I haven't tried this. Their privacy policy says:

What Data VanishedVPN Retains From user Sessions:
Each time a user connects to VanishedVPN, we retain the following data for 30 days: the user's source IP address, the IP address used by the user, connection start and stop time and total number of bytes used.

    Why VanishedVPN retains Session Data:
We retain VanishedVPN session data for 30 days to use with billing issues, troubleshooting, service offering evaluation, and for handling crimes performed over the service.

What VanishedVPN Does Not Collect From user Sessions:
Does not log a user's traffic or the content of any communications

Does not perform deep packet inspection of your traffic, except where requested by the customer for firewall purposes.

Does not perform shallow packet inspection of your traffic, except where requested by the customer for firewall purposes.

Does not discriminate against devices, protocols, or applications. VanishedVPN is network neutral.

Does not throttle your Internet connection.

Does not rate limit Internet connection.
At the moment so far as I'm aware VPN's are exempt from the data retention requirements, though this may change at any time.

The use of a VPN will not effect the loading time of a web browser so I assume that you mean websites take longer to reach than previously (without use of a VPN).

It is possible to choose manually the particular NordVPN server you are connected to....an indication of server loading is visible for all servers in a given location, i.e. Australia, U.K., Germany etc. Loading on any individual server will vary dynamically over time.

The internet is like a multi-lane highway and can become congested over time, which results in "bottlenecks" or slow moving traffic (your data).

I am resident in Australia and use NordVPN, but only when I wish internet anonymity, which is generally for a minority of the time only.

Another point to be aware of - A VPN is not the same as a service which allows DNS reallocation, such as when desiring to view BBC (who utilise DNS blocking) programs from a location other than the U.K. For this, I use dns4me smart dns service.

Be aware also of time differences between different parts of the world, which also determines peak internet usage for that area, as this will be reflected in your own overall access times (speed and latency/lag) when accessing material from those areas.

Im using AirVPN and am really happy with their service. They claim to be owned and run by internet privacy activists and value their users privacy etc. etc.

They also allow up to 4 simulatanous connections which is nice
