I haven't used it myself but some friends highly recommend Tinkercad (tinkercad.com).
I am old school Autocad 14 user but is not suitable for 3D printers. Solidworks is out of my budget, Freecad and a few other seems to be the go. independent advice appreciated

Not sure if it will work for your situation, (I'm presuming you are using Windoze), would Trimble (formerly: Google) Sketchup, do the job? It is free and was my goto tool for basic drafting when I ran windoze.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
yep Sketchup is good, not sure about 3d printing though, I don't have a way to test.
