    Default 3D Printers and consumables

I hope I am in the right section. Maybe Admin should add a new section for 3D printers and cad software as they become common.

I hear 3mm consumable is better then 1.75mm. because the feeder extruder motor works harder shortening it's life expectancy.
I have been looking at the CR10 series in particular the CR-10 S5,

Has anybody had any experience with these things ?

I cannot help with your inquiry, but member Loopyloo started an extensive 3D printer thread several years ago, which has lots of useful information regarding printers and accessories.

I found two threads for you.........and.....

    Read all the posts.

There might be others so make use of the Austech Advanced Search facilty top right of this web page.

Can't see why 3mm would be any better generally but I don't really know, haven't tried one.
I would assume the extruder motor would have more work to do because the 3mm filament would be a lot heavier for a given length so more drag. Also 3mm would be a lot less flexible which can put sideways pressure on the head or even filament breakages.

I have seen on other forums where people really like the cr-10.

The CR10 is good for PLA filament which is not as strong as ABS. I want to print structural parts like car instrument dashboard, some mechanical parts like cog wheels. I heard that when using ABS the whole printer need to be encased in a cabinet or simply use insulating foam panels to make a cabinet, also need to add a heater to the printer bed otherwise the printed object will warp or show cracks.

Has anybody had experience with ABS ver PLA ?

The CR-10 comes with a bed heater, although all three sizes use the same 300x300mm heater from the standard CR-10, so even though the S5 has a 500x500mm bed, only the centre 300x300mm is heated.

The best replacement choice seems to be a stand-alone Keenovo heater that's made specifically for the S5 and heats the whole bed. Keenovo also make enclosure heaters.

Unfortunately we don't really have enough discussion to warrant it, but I did update this particular forums name and description to indicate 3D printing discussion should be in here.
I did a search on 3D printers and only found a couple of threads, which I moved in here from the Electronics forum.

There was a report a US judge has placed a ban on the release/distribution of blueprints for 3D printers to make some sort of a gun................
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

What is it about Americans lately, they seem to have forgotten that the world exists outside the US of A, how does this judge plan on policing the entire internet?

The whole idea shits me anyway, I'm sure there are people out there who think the only thing a 3D printer can make is guns. In America it's probably cheaper (and easier) to buy an actual gun than a 3D printer anyway so what the hell is he going on about???

It doesnt mention or suggest a ban world wide, only in the USA.
However his ban would prevent anyone in the USA from distributing these blueprints to anywhere just like there is a ban on exporting certain Computer Hardware and Software outside the USA.

Factor in the cost of the 3D printer and consumables etc etc and all you end up with after a long time is a crude unreliable gun. Far cheaper, quicker and easier to get a far better gun in the US virtually anywhere if you're desperate enough to have one there. Don't overlook the fact that the plans for these plastic guns were released years ago which makes the banning now a very pointless measure (apart from the political pointscoring).

I have the big S5, I build a polystyrene box using 20mm Foilboard. The bed temperature is set to 90° for ABS filament. It takes 5 minutes to gets to 60°, an hour later it only reaches 80°... Is this normal ?

If you still have the standard bed heater it only heats the centre 300x300mm of the bed, so that's only heating about a third of the total 500x500mm bed area, the other two-thirds is just like a big aluminium heatsink dissipating heat almost as fast as it's being added.

As per post #5 above, you may be better off upgrading to a mains-powered bed heater such as the Keenovo, which heats the entire bed and much (much) faster than the standard bed heater.
