Default Vast decoder shuts down when caravan battery goes into equalisation mode.

This has bugged me for a while but it seems my Vast decoder shuts down whenever my solar panel controller goes into equalisation mode for the caravan battery (120ah AGM). The voltage from the solar regulator goes up to 15.5V which is the voltage set for equalisation. There doesnt seem to be a means of stopping equalisation and battery manufacturers advise that equalisation is required or battery life will be reduced.
Has anyone on this forum with a caravan, solar power and Vast setup had this happen?. We bought this system as we are often remote camping and rely on solar and house battery.

    thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you're running the VAST decoder off 12 volts DC (not with a 240VAC inverter?)

If 12VDC, the box is likely shutting down due to overvoltage.

A DC-DC stabiliser will solve that issue.

Thanks. Yes that seems to be the issue and the DC-DC stabiliser should sort that.

Personally I wouldn't be taking an AGM to 15.5v. That's equalising range for vented flooded cell batteries & even then the manufacturer recommended equalisation voltage for my last set of FLA batteries was (2.5v/cell)=15v maximum.

Any sealed battery shouldn't be taken above 14.5v IMO.
My current set of SLA house batteries has a recommended maximum of (2.4v/cell)=14.4v.

I'd look up the battery manufacturers charging specification & adjust your regulator to their voltage recommendations.
I'm happy to be wrong here, but I doubt the battery manufacturer would suggest 15.5v for an AGM.

It was a new solar controller and rechecking yesterday it was set as a flooded lead acid battery. I have changed the setting to a AGM so hopefully this works. Just a cheap solar controller so I will likely swap it out for a much better unit. My van doesnt use much 12v. Just the TV, vast and a couple of LED internal lights. Battery draw is only about 4 ah at the most.
