Your two preferred options do not account for all the permutations. In this image</strong> the lower right switch has no effect if all the other switches remain as they are, In and will be dependant upon other switches to operate the light. There is no meaningful solution without using relays to simulate one switch.

Not sure what you mean Isemmens?
Depends which solution you're referring to. The first three solutions are not mine, but having checked them, they do "logically" switch current through (or not through) the light bulb. (they short circuit the bulb).
I think you might be referring to the one my friend Ben posted where the switches are arranged in some kind of square with the fifth switch bypassing the other four.

It might not be clear, but if you look at the picture, there is a black dot where the light bulb would be.
The arrow pointing to where the wires cross is to indicate that those wires are not connected together.
Not my drawing, I would have drawn it correctly
The two examples he as given at the two states of the same circuit, all on or all off. Clockwise all state A or anti clockwise, all state B.

    This was my second
Don't know what happened to my links, I did link to the pictures to which I referred, so I shall quote Trash and see if that fixes it.
