    Default Boot issue

    Hi all,
Just a quick question to see if anyone has come across the same issue as me before.
My problem is that my pc won't boot when two sticks of RAM are installed. The RAM is not faulty. I've run memtest, and came back with no errors. I can take out one stick and PC boots fine. I can even swap the ram with the other slot (only have x2) and still boots. As soon as I install two, PC hangs either on windows 7 logo or doesn't even get that far.
I've tried reseating the RAM, even CMOSing motherboard to no avail.

    PC specs:
    Asus A55BM-A/USB3 motherboard
    X2 Kingston KVR16N11/4 GB sticks
    Asus R7240 graphics
    X4 870K CPU

    Any help would be awesome.

    Cheers

If both sticks are, indeed, identical then there is a distinct possibility that something is faulty. Do you have any other matching pairs of RAM that you can use to verify the MOBO. Though I am suspicious of the RAM, Try them in another machine to prove the RAM. Can you get into BIOS with both sticks in place? Do you hear any Beeps? What beep codes do you hear? What is your system BIOS? Can you boot from a live CD?
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I don't have any other matching pairs of RAM. I can boot into BIOS, BIOS is telling me that I have a total of 8GB (4 in each slot). I don't get any beep codes. What do you mean by System BIOS??

    Is your OS 64 bit?

    According to the MB specs:
Due to OS limitation, when installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows® 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Install a 64-bit Windows® OS when you want to install 4GB or more memory on the motherboard.

IF BIOS is telling you that you have 8Gb of RAM and you get no beep codes, then that is likely to indicate that you Operating System is at fault. Try booting from a live CD and see if you can work from there? Boot from your Windoze disk and opt for a system repair. I can't recall the exact procedure now as I no longer use Windoze.

    Edit:
Just noticed your post MTV. well put I forgot the 32b limitation, haven't used one of those for years!

    The MB RAM specs:
    DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

    The RAM you mentioned:
    4GB 2Rx8 512M x 64-Bit PC3-12800

Also looks like the RAM may not be fully compatible.

But that's weird, as i'm using the PC now. Obviously running just one stick of RAM. Surely if it wasn't compatible the PC wouldn't be working at all

    You'd think so.

What about the OS version question I asked... is it 64 bit?

Like I said in my original post, both slots aren't the problem. The PC runs fine if ram is in either slots. Just not both.

Some MOBOs do not play well with "Unauthorised" RAM, but I haven't seen that in decades. In the early days, IBM PCs were only specced with genuine IBM RAM or Hypertech RAM, and you had to get the exact model specified or system stability was compromised. These days, not so much, but it might just be the case. Matched pairs of RAM are still recommended. Though I still suspect the OS.

Thanks for the replies... I actually re-installed the OS with both sticks in (well tried to anyway) the only way I could make the OS install correctly was to only have one stick in.
when it comes to the BIOS update. I was already on the latest version before the CPU install. If I downgrade the version to the one that the CPU was released on, then upgrade to the latest one, do you think this might work? OR do you think I could just try re-installing the latest version, replacing the current one?

Just as a thought, Have you tried another Operating system like Linux? I'm wondering if your issue is Windoze related. You can try a live CD first, so you don't even have to blow away windoze. If the Live system works, that will, at least point to a dodgy operating system.
