I have not had occasion to book small country town hotels but if I do, I will go direct.
The ones I do and will be booking in the future are the large chain hotels, most of whom are OS based companies anyway.
I wonder if they would be open to giving a better price than what is advertised on these travel sites? I imagine would depend on who answers the phone and the authourity they have.... which would seem to me is some one in the front desk earning the minimum award wage as a part time job as they put themselves through Uni.


As far as them not paying tax, Ever heard of Spec savers amoungst others? Won't go there again not only because they are a tax rorting company but because their products and service is shit anyhow.

I was recently in Cairns, went to get a hire car, looked online and found a Eurocar via Webjet for $84 a day!
Thought i would ring them direct, got told promptly that it is cheaper to book Accom and Rental Cars online, her price at the Rental Outlet was $240 a day!!!!

I asked her, "What would you do?", she replied the choice was mine....

Ended up going through AVIS and got a great deal, brand new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport for 6 Days and returning it to a different location for $177.50 all up.

And on the Taxation issue, do you really think AU Gov needs more of our Tax Dollars... Its not like they are careful or smart at spending them.
Phuck em... They don't deserve the revenue is you ask me.

AirBnb it was $79 a night, for the same room!!!!

Who would even bother to own a holiday house in PD any more, $4000 in Council Rates, $3600 in Home Insurance because of cyclone area...
Then perhaps Body Corp Fees, Electricity to run an AirCon to keep mould at bay in summer......

That is a lot of nights using AirBnb for your $10,000 pa in outgoings in you owned a Holiday House.
I give that example, because Ramada will try and push you into time share, which comes with more ongoing costs than above.

Inconveniently there is no general rule. I've come across quite a few smaller motels in country towns where rooms are significantly more expensive online. I remember one in particular where the per night rate was $99 direct and $129 on the well known sites. On the other hand, there are significant savings to be found on these sites, particularly with the larger well known chains.

The internet has destroyed many middlemen but has created a whole new set to replace them. These sites charge significant fees and even many smaller motels and hotels can't afford not to be on them. Personally I always double check. It works both ways. Larger hotels love to charge the full rate. It may well be worth your while grabbing a comfortable seat in the lobby and spending a few minutes on your mobile in this case.

I work away a lot so I use a lot of hotels.
Most hotel owners aren't doing themselves any favours.
If you ring them direct or book direct, they charge the same price. Some of the fvckers even have the hide to then slap 1.5% on top of that because you are using the credit card over the phone to pay for it at their insistence.

Nope... fvck it. I'll book it online and in some cases, it's even cheaper online by $2.

I'm all for taking the middle man out of the equation, but if it doesn't make my life any easier and that money goes into the hotelier's pocket. Why bother?

And then there is examples of where I've booked online and there are no problems cancelling if my plans change.
But booking with some of the hotel owners, they refuse to give any sort of refund.

An even when I book say one night online and I tell them I'm thinking of extending one or two nights. They still sting me the full price.
That's an extra $15 per night in their pocket.


Of course, there are some good hoteliers, and those guys have my loyalty stitched. One town I stay at, I get a good discount, even better for cash.
If I ring them and give them as much notice as possible, I get an even better rate. His booking can be a bit sporadic, so if I fill in his low occupancy days and avoid his high days, he looks after me. And where I have to book longer terms like 7 or 10 days. He's got rates you just can't refuse. And he knows that being a small town there isn't a lot to do or eat, so his little restaurant with simple cheap meals like a $16 steak and chips. $2 for a can of coke. It's not the best meal on earth, but a small rump steak or chicken schnity and you feel strangely satisfied.

Sometimes I wonder if people just come and stay at this hotel because of his simple, cheap no frills, no fuss attitude.

back on topic though , yes there are issues with using any site like Trivago etc but they can also save your bacon and i dont mind paying for thier service.

I travel OS a bit and sometimes to non english speaking countries where doing an online book is the only way to go. Just last month i was in Japan ,and when i got to the hotel late afternoon in Hiroshima it had been closed that morning due to a burst water main. so i jumped back online and found a comparable place close by and booked it in less than 10mins. That was worth every cent of whatever commission they took in my opinion.

and as for the non payment of tax issue - well i flew on Qantas and they dont pay tax either

back on topic, i booked a room for a couple of nights in perth next month.
booking directly on hotel website - $166 a night.
booked on booking.com - $138 a night.
just checked trivago - $161 a night on wotif

So it pays to shop around. i wouldn't say any of these type of sites are ripoffs, just another option.
so they don't pay tax in au, neither do apple etc...
