    Default A different outback mode of travel for me

    This past week I went to the Flinders Rangers with 4 others on the adventure bike. What a blast. Is anyone else into this kind of riding?

    Fantastic Leroy.
    Seems it's the next big thing in bikes. Every middle aged rider is doing it.
    KTM AU sinking a lot of money and time into the growth of the sector.

    You get sick of those tiny fold up chairs after a while tho :-)
    No beer fridge sucks, so hipflask of whiskey it is.

    So many planned rides now.
    BTW RACV Total Care will get your bike shipped home free, if a shop can't fix it for 3 days.
    And it's very easy to convince a shop they can't fix it :-)

    It seems every second bike is an Adventure bike just for touring let alone hitting the dirt. They are big and comfortable with heaps of power! Well not my little cutie lol but the big KTM 1190 Adventure R for example.
    I have total care....just in case
    I have a helinox copy from ebay The real thing is a bit pricey lol

    Yep, that's the chairs!

    I more admire the guy doing this on an old DR600 or XR400.
    I think light weight is the go now.
    We watched a mate struggle so much with his 1190 in the sand.

    I'd be happy with a 250F I think
    We came to the opinion a 500EXC and vehicle assistance is the go.
    But it's not in the spirit of Adventure Riding :-(

    there's so many with opinions about what is the 'spirit'. 'in the old days we didn't have epirbs...those city folk set them off when they run out of coffee'....
    At the end of the day you can ride anything. Whatever you feel comfortable on. I'm happy with my bike. It's not the flashest or fastest but does everything I need at the moment.

    What sort of range do you get out of a tank of fuel? I used to hoon around on a somewhat modified DT175, I could ride out of trouble with a little skill, and my mate on his old Suzi 400 could only dial on the power and hope for the best. One particular day all I got was 60km on a tank of fuel.

    In my much younger days, I had a somewhat Modded IT 465.
    My god that thing was a beast. There were few people who rode it that would hold the thing through more than 1 Gear in the power band. Would brake traction in any gear at any speed on dirt and just spray a rooster tail. All you had to do to win any race was get the jump at the start, no one could pass you for the flying rocks and dirt after that.
    Being I had the thing juiced up till the throttle was like an on off switch, Riding that in the power band sucked fuel like no tomorrow. Nothing to start off an afternoon with a full tank and a Jerry can and be out in a few hours. I reckon if you held the thing in the power band you could do a tank 14l? I think, in probably under 20 Min. Mind you, hanging onto that explosion for 20 Min was about all you could do in a day you were so stuffed afterwards. The thing that limited me really riding the thing hard for any time was not the fuel or fatigue though, it was the cost of replacing the back tyre all the time. It just destroyed them. I actually got another back wheel so I could double the time I went back to the tyre place which was way too frequently.

    I regret selling that thing, always have. It was just such a ridiculous thing with so much power that came on in an out of control explosion. I did the engine work myself and clearly went too far with it but I sure enjoyed the notoriety it got! I knew I went too far first time I started it. the way it Idled and shook was hillarious. I looked at a mate and said, I think I went a bit far with the porting and compression. He said Oh, you think and walked off shaking his head.

    I'm sure they make much more powerful bikes now straight off the floor but I'd gaurantee nothing could put the fear in good riders like that thing did. Nor would they have that same unreal sound.

    Other thing is now you have to rebuild the bastards after about 20 Hours. My IT screamed like no tomorrow and I ran good oil and plenty of it and must have ridden it a couple of hundred hours in the time I had it and the thing never fell off performance one bit. Might have been shagged in the rings but I never had need to open it again and see.
    Still was a satisfyingly terrifying thing to hang onto for dear life.

    I love adventure bikes , i bought a Yamaha XT660 back in 2004 when the craze started and i still have it. I had all these plans to add tanks , panniers , etc and do some serious touring but here it is unmodified still running road tyres lol

    Yep, sometimes simple is best when it comes to these bikes.



    Mate still has his '96 XR600
    Never serviced
    Never looked after
    And it still rounds up young riders on their fancy bikes.
    Reliable as the day is long
    If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

    I can identify with that george, my DT was exactly the same. You daren't hit power below 3rd gear or you'd be sitting on your bum wondering where the bike went. Top speed was only about 80kph but getting there was downright scary! That bike was how I earned my nickname at work. I'd just re-registered it, so had to have trials universals on it to get through rego (in the NT) and they were no-where near as predictable as the knobbies I usually ran. I was coming across the carpark at the rear of work with the back sliding nicely and then hit the bitumen. I expected it to grip and pull straight, Nah! It let go properly and I went down in a cloud of dust! From then on I was called "Crash". No damage to anyone or thing, but it was speccy!

    Ihave a 17.4l tank and I've gone over 400km and ran out lol. So 350km easy. It's very economical.
