Default New Xiaomi Mi Box S is here with Android Oreo-based Android TV, (USA)

New Xiaomi Mi Box S is here with Android Oreo-based Android TV, Google Assistant, and 4K HDR support

While Google was busy announcing a bunch of products we already knew about, Xiaomi had an announcement of their own to make.
Along with the Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL, Google Home Hub, and Pixel Slate, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Box S Android TV. This is the set-top box we heard about last month.

As previously reported, the Xiaomi Mi Box S is actually the Mi Box 4, as the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 was launched as simply the “Mi Box” in the U.S.
There is not a ton of differences between the Mi Box S and Mi Box. It has a familiar design and very similar specs: 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and Amlogic S905X quad-core SoC.
The box can play 4K HDR content at up to 60fps, and it also supports Dolby DTS for high-definition audio. Other specs include Bluetooth 4.2, one HDMI 2.0A port, one audio out port, and one USB 2.0 port.

One big difference is the included remote. The new remote has a Google Assistant button, Netflix shortcut button, and live TV button.
The Mi Box S is also launching with Android 8.1 Oreo, while Android Oreo was just released to the Mi Box this summer.
The Mi Box S will be available in the U.S. for just $59.99. Customers can pick one up from Walmart starting on October 19th and pre-orders should be opening up sometimes today.

Considering these Mi boxes don't have a wired lan port, are persons using usb 3.0 to gigabit lan adapters or? Can adapters handle (& cleanly deliver) something like a 45gb 4k x265 file over cat6?

Hopefully the 4 will run better with Android 8 than the current Mi Box 3.

The current model never skipped a beat with Android 6, but since auto-updating to 8 a couple of months back it is slow, freezes frequently and requires almost daily reboots to function.

    Here are some reviews

Plus also a chart list with test scores of boxes 2019.

Xiaomi would be very good choice if on a budget (good value for money)
but Nvidia shield still top of the tree when money is no issue.

There are heaps of different boxes.
Here is spread sheet with 89 reviewed models for 2018.

If Nvidia drop their price by $100-150 and price in line with most models
I would think they would have majority market and we wouldn't even give
    other brands a look in.

Does anyone here actually own one ? I am interested in how it differs to the Mi Box 3, if at all.

I was thinking of buying another Mi Box 3, but then thought maybe I should get a Mi Box S as they are newer so would likely to get updates for longer. But realistically, its a strange upgrade for them ?? A new model that's basically exactly the same as the old one ?

Can report the Simplecom NU301 works OOTB with Mi Box S. I simply plugged in the adapter and had LAN internet.

For good measure, as note, I additionally enabled developer options on the box by Settings/About/Build OK 7 times. In Dev options under USB I changed from MTP to USB ethernet mode.

I won't report back unless there are stability or connectivity issues, but appears all good.

I just ordered one off ebay. I looked at the Ozbargain website above and it was cheaper but seems like it was going to ship from May 2nd and then take another 10-25 days to ship. I decided I'll not have a beer for a week or so instead to justify the extra expense lol

Just a few notes to save others time, after a few weeks of use:

    - New out of the box; will not allow updates to apps or new app installs unless location services are turned ON via wifi options
    - Will not allow app updates with a USB ethernet adapter plugged into the unit; you cannot update using ethernet connectivity. You must unplug the USB adapter itself (not just unplug ethernet from adapter) and update from wifi connection only, again with location services enabled
    - If using PLEX (local server) and a USB ethernet adapter, plex will see the connection as external internet and automatically transcode to 480p (poor settings) regardless of server or client settings. This issue is known to PLEX and has been resolved with the most recent update. Read more . I resolved by sideloading the Plex client beta apk which is linked in thread.
    - From a good deal of reading, all above issues are as result of any usb to ethernet adapter eg not specific to any one brand or manufacturer (all affected)
    - You can change your to USA so can install Hulu, Pandora etc. without the need to sideload (so channels appear on homescreen not via sideload launcher). You will obviously require DNS fixing and location services need be turned off in Mi Box S settings before channel use.
