I remember a similar case like this happening in Tasmania a few years ago where the property owner allowed another live there with no formal agreements in place, made no effort to pay Rates and Taxes nor set any conditions so after a number of years, the occupant who had paid all the Rates and charges applicable applied to claim the property as a 'Squatter' and like this case, it was granted.

It's an old story, dated JUNE 9, 2016.
I'm fairly sure it came up in discussion at the time.
While this article is dated 2016, this has has just happened again Sydney with a cottage currently valued at $1 Million plus.
It was reported on TEN's Sydney News.

There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"
while i dont agree with the sneaky way the developer got hold of the place , i find it hard to believe that the previous owners family didnt pick up on the issue soon after his death.
20 years ago my Uncle got ownership of the two acres and house he had been living in in the Wollongong area. The house had been built in the depression and my Grandparents moved into the property in the mid 40s. The land was part of a very large parcel of land and the arrangement was that rent was paid to the landowner but all other costs were the responsibility of my Grandparents.
Fast forward 50 years, my Grandparents had passed on, so had the landowner, no more rent was being paid but my uncle who also had lived there since the 40s was still there and paying rates on 2 acres of bush and other costs. He applied to the court for ownership under Squatter's Rights laws and won the case. The descendants of the owner of the original parcel of land had not been enforcing their rights as owners so then forfeited their rights after the required period of time.
I dont agree with these laws but the issue happens more than you would think - particularly if you know the law and work the system as the guy in the news article did.

I've done the same.40 years ago I bought 2 acres and an old house near Tamworth. A few years later the old women next door had to go to a Nursing home and I offered to buy her property ,3acres,
I paid her the money in front of my other neighbour,a JP.
When I went to the Lands department the said ,this land does not exist.I asked my neighbour in sydney,he said, sorry you've done your money.MyJP farmer next door told me to sit on it and then I bought it of the crown.
The previous owner hadn't pay rates since the 30ts,no computer then.
According to a follow up in the Newspapers regarding this article, it mentions a period of Twelve (12) years is the minimum time that needs to pass before a claim for Squatters Rights can be made.
Buying from the Council or other body for Unpaid Rates is about Five Years or so I think.
Those who have seen the articles about a house in Sydney (Bondi) that the local Council is trying to sell to recoup costs from trying to clean the place up, the article said that if the Sale does go ahead, the buyer has to try and evict the current owners if they choose not to leave.
