looks like a DJI inspire if that is the right pic for the story. At the cost of them I doubt it is a kid

From Sussex Police (in the story)

"The drone image in our previous tweets was used for illustrative purposes only and not the devices being sought. It is believed that the Gatwick devices used are of an industrial specification."

I don't know what their definition of 'industrial specification' is.... but it suggests it's expensive and probably physically large.

2 days now and still going.....

Imagine if they hit every UK Airport at once, would shut the country down
That is all i've learned following this story

For hobbyists major aiports are locked out with pre-progammed 'No Fly Zones'
However it is possible to fly a DJI drone and others with clearance:

so I doubt then it was a DJI. But many of the Chinese copies have no such firmware restrictions
Seen a couple of home made jobs as well that are big.
Wont take much for someone to get shot if this goes on, sad thing is the innocent get screwed around again

    Somehow makes no sense.
If they move away when somebody gets close to them then there is somebody watching and transmitting data.
Surely possible to triangulate the transmitter. Especially if these things can stay up so long and it is been going on for over 24h.
They are pretty powerfull and would produce a typical signal to identify them.

Gosh Google can track every single one of you with your phone even without GPS but there is nobody in Britian capable of finding the transmitter?
And doesn't anybody have jammers? Where is the military when you need it?

Agreed, which makes me wonder if they are dealing with someone a bit "bigger".

Think I just figured out how they might be doing this while staying untraceable.
The drone is autonomous and has some pre-programmed way points it visits.
It is also carrying a mobile phone. The phone's camera is sending the video over the carrier's data network to somebody on the internet
using VPN and a proxy tunnel of course. The user sends back data to a simple app on the phone that 'plays' a signal out of the headphone jack
that contains information to move the drone to other way points or even fully controls it.

If that is the case they could simply shut down the cell towers for a few minutes, get close and destroy it
They already do that when terror attacks could be imminent. At least worth a try.

Gatwick airport is back to normal operations according to the report at .

"Gatwick runway reopens after drone chaos.

Gatwick's runway has reopened after drones caused the airport to shut down for more than a day.

The airport, the UK's second busiest, said 837 flights were scheduled but there were delays and cancellations.

Boss Chris Woodroofe said "mitigating measures" from the government and military had given him "confidence to reopen".

The drone operator is still at large and police said it was possible they were an environmental activist.

The airport is expected to be "back to normal" by the end of Saturday.

Thousands of passengers - including some attending funerals, honeymoons and Christmas reunions with their families - remain stranded at Gatwick.

The airport could not operate while the drones were in flight in case they hit and damaged a plane."

Or the drone is using image movement sensing software, so that as soon as it sees anything moving towards it, it moves to a pre set next waypoint, or a random point of a programmed group.

Well if they really had an AI that could distinguish approaching objects at such far distance from other movements(IMO unlikely) then shutting down the cell towers would reveal that, other wise approach and destroy.
Of course the designer could have built in a failsafe for lost signal and they move away from the airport, which would then allow flight movements again just with the annoyance of not using your cell phone at that time, a lesser evil IMO.

    The reports that...

    Gatwick drones:
    Two arrested over flight disruption

Two people have been arrested in connection with a string of drone sightings which brought Gatwick Airport to a standstill.

Sussex Police said it made the arrests at about 22:00 GMT on Friday.

Flights from Gatwick were grounded for more than a day after the devices were seen near the runway.

The force said "pro-active" investigations into "the criminal use of drones" continued, and urged the public to contact it with information.

Police have yet to disclose the ages and genders of those arrested and where they were apprehended.

Supt James Collis said officers remained at the airport, ready to "detect and mitigate" further drone flights by deploying a range of tactics.

He asked passengers and people living nearby to remain vigilant and report any suspicions.

"Every line of inquiry will remain open to us until we are confident that we have mitigated further threats to the safety of passengers," he added.

Would it not be possible to use a jamming device and force it down? Hell or just get close with a helicopter and shoot it with a shotgun. Doesn’t seem that hard.

The 'jamming' signal would have to be very directional in order to ensure it did not interfere with other nearby communication services?

There is also the obvious problem of risk to life and property by an out-of-control drone as it plummeted to earth.

Hell or just get close with a helicopter and shoot it with a shotgun. Doesn’t seem that hard.
I imagine that the drone operator would make the drone disappear as soon as a helicopter came within sight.

There is also the risk to other people nearby from the shotgun pellets.

Authorities have to obey the law just as much as you and I do.

Your proposed solutions are as irresponsible as the action of the drone operator, if not worse.

Jamming devices are often used... such as the ones pictured above.... also ones that fire nets.

They would work, forcing the drone down and there would be no danger, as the airport was closed to aircraft.

I assume what the authorities preferred was to trace the control signal in an effort to arrest the operator/s, so causing the drone to lose control and crash wouldn't help them achieve that.

Shooting the drone with a shotgun from a helicopter?... seriously?

Apart from the danger of using a firearm, under aviation rules, it's a no-fly zone for ALL aircraft when there is a drone in the area, which is the exact reason why the airport was closed to traffic! So no helicopter would be allowed to fly.

This was obviously done with malicious intent... hope the offenders are dealt with severely.
